Who here is still Catholic??

Are you saying if they never existed?

They certainly held up scientific advancements and bullied/killed people who disagreed with them though. Whether the world woudl be better off if they never existed....it would probably be the same as there would be some other organization that would be in place of them.

It would be certainly better if they went away as an organization right now.

Damn, norcalninja is pretty ignorant, but this is a case of what popular media shows vs. actual experience.

NO. This is false.

the general population doesnt put hundreds of thousands of dollars down to keep convicted :eek::eek::eek:philes out of prison.

You are lying.

Neither does the Catholic church.

The church spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep from losing hundreds of millions of dollars for things that happened decades ago. Thats not evil. Thats smart. To think its about anything other than money on either side would be ignorant.

Lol. I would have donated a few bucks just to reward them for having the balls to say that.

He had just moved here from Budapest, and was living off toast and peanut butter every day while working in kitchens washing dishes and putting himself through school.....nor was he a fan of the catholic church anyways. I'm surprised he didn't punch the guy in the face.

I'm not sure really about that as I never lived in those times. They certainly held up scientific advancements and bullied/killed people who disagreed with them though.

It would be certainly better if they went away as an organization right now.

They also promoted education and healthcare. They provided the first universities and kept Latin and Greek writings alive and well.

It has been common for clergymen-scholars to also work as scientists - among them Nicholaus Copernicus who placed the sun at the centre of the solar system; Gregor Mendel who observed the foundations of modern genetics; and mathematician Georges Lema

What large institution hasn't?

And catholic clergy have been some of the best scientists ever and given us everything from the Big Bang to genetics to heliocentrism. The Pontifical Academy of Sciences to this day is one of the most elite scientific clubs in the world.

The Catholic Church is not perfect but overall it's influence on the world has been a good one.

Lumping catholic people into what the church has done is a fallacy. It's like saying...well, Hitler was a Christian so they're influence on the world has been a bad one.

There have been good Catholic people, no doubt. A hell of a lot of them.

They also bullied scientists that disagreed with their stance on things, and you can't exactly say they have done heath care and science a huge disservice recently.

So that's an excuse for them?

Well, every one else did it so....it's cool if we do it as well.

I don't see what they have done recently that was a disservice to science.

My response to your allegations of "sexual misconduct"?

Sexual misconduct is wide umbrella which includes slapping a coworker on the ass, as well as a trusted family friend (priest) anally raping a 2 year old.

Maybe you think those two are similar, but I got news for you, they are not.

The 4% of priests are all :eek::eek::eek:phile cases. The vast majority of the 10% you mentioned was adults and teenagers dealing with each other.

Then there is the issue of the Church protecting the :eek::eek::eek:s. The general public doesn't protect :eek::eek::eek:s, stupid.

Your a sick fuck for supporting this atrocious organization.

I've been very civil with you throughout this whole discussion, despite disagreeing with almost everything that you've said. And yet, you feel the need to call me stupid and a sick fuck. Is there something wrong with you?

It's just a realistic outlook.

No institution is perfect.

That's true, but they've done some absolutely horrible things among the good things they have done. I don't see that as an institution worried about praise, especially when their main objective is just to get rich.

Ya, there is, Im fucking pissed that people get away with such evil.

sorry, dude, but its a very emotional topic. I could keep my cool on any other issue.

After seeing that documentary Deliver Us From Evil, you put your self in the shoes of those kids whose lives got ruined, and it breaks your heart. One of them, right down the road in Stockton.

Noone went to prison. The Vatican made sure of that.

Sorry, a disservice to the medical community. Condoms don't do anything? Shouldn't wear them? Doesn't help the prevention of HIV?

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember them saying condoms don't work I remember them saying condoms aren't 100% effective only abstinence is.

They weren't telling people to go around and fuck without any condoms.

A lot of abuse is incestuous in nature and much of it goes unreported.
But put hundreds of millions of dollars of the churchs money on the table and people come out of the woodwork. Make sense?

Emotional outbursts and insults don't help your argument.

One thing you are completely ignoring about the whole issue, is that the church is selling itself on "we are the good guys". Yet it turns out, they are actually worse.

That, is evil.

Getting into peoples families by selling God to them, then taking advantage of that position and raping their children.

How any of you could not be outraged by this is beyond me.

Yeah, they have done horrible, disgusting things but there is also a lot to appreciate. I'm not a Christian but I love Christian/Catholic art, music, architecture, etc. throughout the ages. Listen to some Gregorian chant or medieval hymn with a backdrop of some great cathedral. Shit is amazing.

if i didn't take my art appreciation class at the end of last year for my fine arts credit to graduate i would have no idea what the fuck you were talking about. but i did take it and i feel hear ya.
