Tom doesn't want anyone but Jon/Stipe. He has already said he would fight both guys to prove that he's the best HW in the world. Why would he waste his time with Gane?

It was bound to be Volkov vs  someone again. He's not getting Jones, has fought everyone else in the top 5, and Stipe doesn't actually fight/will only fight Jones, so unless he wanted to fight down at #7 and go against Almeida, there weren't a ton of options for a fresh matchup. Avenging a loss to Gane gets him Aspinall and a chance to also avenge that loss. The only other fight that makes sense for him is Blaydes, so he could try to avenge that loss, but he'd probably rather fight someone coming off a win. The matchup with Gane makes absolute sense.

Gane is #2 while being 2-2 in his last 4 and hasn’t fought in a year. Someone shouldn’t get to stay ranked at #2 being that inactive when not injured.

Volkov’s win over Pav is better than any of Gane’s wins. Blaydes has beaten Almeida.

UFC seems pretty happy to keep Gane away from any kind of wrestling for as long as possible and in the top 3. I think they're heavily invested in him as one of their few marketable heavyweights.

I think they want to keep him in the top three (and away from wrestlers) because Jones vs Gane II is always a possibility in this shithole of a HW division.. And then Jones vs Stipe II again. Then Arlovski, who has actually fought recently, unlike Stipe.

It's a fight that makes sense rankings wise & it's been a few years since the first fight, I'm looking forward to it.

yeah, most of the time i'm not crazy about rematches, but this one is pretty cool, both timing-wise and style-wise. it's a fun fight in a weak division by two dynamic strikers who are almost guaranteed to strike. and at HW, it still has relevancy.

Agreed but giving him volkov is doing him a favor. Giving him the Brasilian grappler not so much.

I think it's a great match-up at this stage. I thought Volkov was washed after Aspinall completely disarmed him, but he seems to have got his head together, gone on a good run and showed signs of significant improvement.

Gane has many laudable attributes but for me has shown precious little sign of wanting to evolve and take his game to the next level. This match-up is a real litmus test for them both, if Volkov comes through it then he really enters the conversation for title shots.
