Where does Volk stand with his Legacy if he never wins another fight?

Aldo has 9 defenses but had lost to Conor, Volk and Max

Volk has 5 defenses and 2 losses at LW. Lets assume for the sake of the thread he gets a loss at FW.

Max has 3 defenses but also 3 losses to Volk and a loss to Conor. He also has a loss at LW to Dustin.

Conor has 0 defenses but is undefeated at FW and won the LW title from an experienced LW. He also has wins over Max and Aldo.

To me Aldo, Volk and Conor are neck to neck and Max is slightly behind.

To be fair, that's the only reason people are putting him ahead of Aldo now. If we agree losses past your prime are irrelevant for the GOAT conversation, there's no way you can argue Volkanovski has surpassed Aldo.

Looking at his fights, I'd put Holloway's prime closer to 2016 or 2017. Volk beat him in 2019, 2020, and 2022. That's at LEAST two years removed from Holloway's prime, and possibly as many as six.

I think its inarguable that Holloway-Volk 1 was a prime version of Max Holloway. He hadn't lost at FW since 2014 and had finished 4 of his last 5 fights there. I'm also just using my eyeballs as to what Max look like for 2 and 3 and what he's accomplished afterwards.

I haven't seen anything from him that says he's a diminished fighter or not in his prime anymore. I just think Volk is just a better fighter and tough match up for him and that's why he dominated him the third fight not because max lost a step.

I think the 5-4 thing is a little dishonest considering 3 of those losses were to Volk and the other was short notice fight at LW. Sandwiched around the 3rd Volk loss is 3 top 5 wins at FW

Yeah, not so much "how much longer" but how much further right? He'd still Peter out at around 34-35, 36 at the latest but he'd have been so much better. He began training for MMA at like 22 and had his first bout at 23. Islam had his first pro bout at 18 and had amateur MMA bouts and hundreds of Sambo bouts stemming from 15 onward where he regularly trained with Abdulmanap and Khabib and even before 15, he did Sanda, some Freestyle and started in Tae Kwon Do around 9 under a guy who would go on to be an Olympian.

These guys starting late will become rarer and rarer, MMA has reached that boxing level where almost all the top level guys at 170lbs and lower began very young and have pedigree. Volk was just a very special talent, special mind and special athlete.

Aldo is not the best FW,fastest title loss,2 consecutive loss to another GOAT candidate(Max) and those were beatdowns,outclassed by current GOAT Volk. No he isn't the FW GOAT.

Max also got submitted by Dustin and lost to Dennis Bermudez. If you're gonna bring up the completely irrelevant Conor fight, you may as well be thorough.

I only compare wins and losses between the 4 fighters. I only brought up the Dustin fight to highlight that Conor is the only one with wins at LW.

I know it’s your opinion, but I don’t see how Conor is even in the same category as Aldo, Volkanovski or Max. The 3 I just mentioned defended and has fought & beaten more top 10 fighters than Conor ever at FW. Conor’s best FW win towards beating Aldo was Dustin Poirier. Mendes, there is an asterisk but still a good win when it comes to the resume, but a full camp Mendes I think smashes Conor. Conor beating Holloway is a null statement, Holloway was coming off a loss and was a late replacement, Conor also had more experience and beat an essentially a striped white belt in Holloway.
 
He's the GOAT of a division so he'd be a Tier 2 All-Time fighter.

Just below the All-Time GOAT's like GSP, Jon, Anderson, DJ, Khabib, Fedor.

I honestly don't get why people still rate BJ so highly at LW besides nostalgia. Charles Olivia has a way better resume than he does at LW, and so does Benson Henderson, Khabib, and probably Frankie Edgar who has two wins over him.

Get the fuck out of here with this "if he never wins another fight" bullshit. He gets TKO'd for the first time in his career (vs a guy he arguably beat earlier in the year), now he's basically Tony Ferguson.
 
not as good as aldo.
better than max and mike brown.

in terms of “legacy,” faber probably has a better one, despite being an inferior fighter. since he pretty much put light weight classes on the map stateside. they also have the same amount of defenses.
 
I don't think there's another division where it's as hard to pick out a GOAT.

Aldo, Max, Volk. All competing at the same time. Maybe not in their primes. But it's a tough call as to who holds the crown as best ever. I think regardless of what happens (unless he carries on for a few more years as Champion) Volk will always be a part of the debate that 3 occupy.
