When do you sever ties with your friends?

Am I in your group?... Seems like I would be the guy my friends would try to distance themselves from!

Only reason I'm nice to this person is they have been friends with my group for much longer than I was. Another one of them just likes to start confrontations trying to act tough shit is getting old. Never sever, I'll put a lot of space and time between the more difficult friends. If a friend of a friend is an asshole I don't even try to be nice.

If my friends do stupid shit I don't mind calling them out on it. There is always a respectful and constructive way to do this without starting a war, take this into account. It might not be as easy as fighting and both of you need to swallow your pride but if you feel it's worth it, don't forcefully break your friendship.

However, if their stupid shit is morally wrong beyond a certain degree, let's say one of my friends rapes someone, I severe ties, instantly.

If a friend hits on my girl, disrespects me or my family in front of others and especially if a friend turns out to be illoyal - I'm gone for good. Usually if one of these things happens there is not even any need for discussion, I just walk away and delete the person from my life. And I don't care one bit about social circles, it's a matter of pride and respect.

I've done this many times before and I won't hesitate on walking away from such people again.

I had friends before where I didn't say shit because they were sensitive and would get their feelings hurt.

Long story short, I got rid of them. It was tough because I knew some of them since high school. Plenty were talking smack after we didn't hang out anymore. Even to this day, when I meet some of them at random places, they'd pretend to be cool with me. Deep down inside I can tell they're still butthurt. It's awkward as hell because they shake my hand and pretend they're happy to see me.

Edit: I was probably changing as a person too, so it wasn't totally my friends' fault at all. It's just one of those situations where I had to make a decision if I was happy hanging out with them.

I've been in situations like this with people I used to go to school with that I never see anymore.

I like this maybe, I'll just fade them out, but not completely burn bridges as others have suggested.

Sometimes years later a friend can turn his life/attitude around. I've been surprised several times by old friends who I once avoided. They now have great jobs and nice pads I can crash at when traveling around, sometimes for weeks at a time. Awesome drinking buddies now as well.
 
Yeah Sam has a good point. If I decided to stop hanging out with friends today, I wouldn't tell them straight out I didn't like their attitudes but I'd just kind of walk away.

It's always good to give people chances. Doesn't mean you'll hang out with them though. But less chaotic and hurt feelings this way.
 
I usually try to be as good of a friend to a person, as he/she is to me. If I feel like a person is reliable, always willing to provide help if needed i try to act the same way. While if a person seems like he is hanging out with me only because he/she has nothing else to do, there is no way i'm doing any significant favors to that person. Go to a party, get drunk-sure, not much other than that though. This way I never get upset over shitty "friends", i don't have expectations from them and I don't feel entitled to any significant commitment from them.
