Whats going on in Chicago?

I wonder if BrianFantana has read the CDC's gun research Obama commissioned after Sandy Hook that showed defensive use of guns by potential victims are actually more common than offensive use by criminals.

Quoth the raven:

Ok, let's look at the facts, shall we:
  1. Guns are used in self-defence in approximately 0.9% of gun victimization crimes (in a study of 14,000 gun crimes): http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091743515001188

You clearly didn't even read the article.

Was this a peer-reviewed study, or was it a doc review of questionable literature by a person with no credentials who states:

"This Alternative Hypothesis is that, for partially genetic reasons, Blacks are more likely than Whites to exhibit various personality traits which in turn causes them to have high rates of crime, poverty, and single parenthood."?

Because it's the latter. This is absolute garbage and it's not worth your time trying to argue it's not.

So, if you've seen Jordan Peterson's lectures, we know that relative poverty, in other words low status position in the hierarchy, causes increased emotional instability because the brain assumes your life is in danger. Which it very could be if we didn't live in a safe welfare society. The idea of social rank is literally coded into our brain structures as a psychological phenomenon. Not to be confused with actual poverty/deprivation, of which there's little in the western world.

So when we refer to "poor" people, what we're actually referring to is people who are experiencing emotional distress and volatility due to their low rank. This makes them more likely to be violent, abuse drugs, lack impulse control, etc. And what the research suggests is that improving income inequality reduces the amount of anxiety that everyone from the middle-class to lower classes experiences due this phenomenon in the brain.

The gun debate I think is more or less irrelevant. There's 300M+ guns, you're not getting rid of that sheer amount within our lifetime. You're simply giving poor people more efficient ways to be violent, but they will be violent regardless of what tools they have at their disposal.

It's a socioeconomic disparity problem, according to decades of academic research. I posted the link earlier and I don't feel like going to search for it.

BULLSHIT. It's a lack of morals problem brought on by a lack of parenting problem. My hometown area in Pennsylvania has a median household income of $22,168. Per Capita income is $14,858. The area is 98.56% white, predominantly Christian, and has a crime rate below the National Average and a divorce rate below the National Average. I guess the people didn't read your "decades of academic research" and come to the conclusion that they should be violent due to so many being at or below the poverty level. Once you've lived on this Earth a few years and visited other Countries you'll come to the logical conclusion that some cultures are absolute crap that perpetuate violence which isn't explained by something as simple or singular as income.

NFL athletes earn a hefty chunk of change. It doesn't stop them from getting arrested for assault, gun possession, domestic violence, drug offenses, etc etc: http://nfl-arrests.pointafter.com/

Money doesn't buy morals and ethics.

His article isn't peer reviewed, but he cites several studies in it which are.

It's pretty clear there are genetic differences between blacks and whites, why is is acceptable to say black people are on average stronger or more athletic, but not that on average white people have a higher IQ or are less prone to violence? All of these things are true btw.

When you boil it down to unfiltered nonsense and pass nuance and context without collecting $200, of course it seems so simple.

This is a blatantly, openly, patently racist man sitting in his home office searching Google for "research" to confirm his prejudices. Some of the studies are peer-reviewed that he references, but he doesn't have the ability to correctly interpret the data. His conclusions are unsupported, and his "research" is bunk.

Who's peer reviewed this comment? I can't read it unless it has been peer reviewed.

for those posting 'economic issue', uh what? why aren't there more murders in rural, poor white areas then?

Care to tell me what the poorest regions of the US are? SInce they aren't counties, it doesn't show on many lists, but Sioux Reservations in SD are generally the worst in the US by income per capita. Its why so many South Dakota counties show up per capita shittier county lists....

Care to guess what the murder rate is there as well? last time I checked, it's roughly 0 granted that could mean Tribal Police/FBI simply aren't investigating, but still...

80% unemployment on say Pine Ridge Reservation, 0 murders in 2015.....

I'm not presenting my comment as valid research in an academic setting. As I have published academic papers, I know what sort of rigors you have to go through to get into a reputable journal. A blog is not a valid source of information, particularly when the individual has no credentials other than the fact he is an unabashed and proud racist.

I really don't know what you're trying to defend, aside from that you, too, are a racist and pretty proud of it.

You can lead a gun controll to water...

Dude, it links to the same site, and when I click on the chapters it leads me to a sign-in form. It could be because I'm out of the country. I just want a link to the full text PDF.

Unfiltered, Nuance, Context, $200? I think you linked those studies because you can't come to a conclusion based on personal experience so you simply read a paper and trust that it's the unfiltered truth defining a reality you're far removed from. How Collegiate of you!

Sure it does. :D

From this very thread:

The murder rate, by state, goes from highest to lowest:
  1. DC;
  2. Louisiana;
  3. Maryland;
  4. Missouri;
  5. South Carolina;
  6. Nevada;
  7. New Mexico;
  8. Michigan;
  9. Mississippi;
  10. Tennessee;
  11. Arizona;
  12. Delaware;
  13. Georgia;
  14. Pennsylvania;
  15. Florida;
  16. Oklahoma;
  17. Texas;
  18. California;
  19. North Carolina;
  20. Virginia; ...
New York rolls in at 24. Illinois is at 29.

You're looking at an anecdote, not a trend. These are the trends.

pretty weird that Idaho is the 10 poorest state, yet had the 8th fewest gun murders in 2010 and the 7th lowest murder rate. Also the 6th most gun owning state

I wonder why that is?
