If I cared what people in 1776 thought about how things should work, I'd have to get rid of my indoor plumbing, throw out my computer and cell phone, and start panning for gold on the riverbank. Then I'd come home to a nice meal prepared by my slaves and whip my children for speaking too loudly at dinner.
It's 240 years in the future from when a document was drafted by a bunch of old white dudes fearing an imminent invasion from Britain. It's time to assess the present rather than looking to the past for guidance.
How can America even consider itself a first-world country, or a civilized nation?
We don't it's a terrible place and people should never try to come here especially illegaly.
It's unfortunate that the nation is unable to house and feed so many, that so many do not have access to clean water, that so many are murdered every day, that corruption and corporation control so much. These are not things I associate with an advanced civilized society![]()
We have programs to help the poor here and in fact our poor live better and have more then most anywhere in the world.
How can America even consider itself a first-world country, or a civilized nation?
What is it then that causes so many to turn to crime?
Well they came up with a good thing and that includes a way to make changes for the future, if changes are wanted.
You may not like it because people don't want to do things your way but the majority in the majority of the states like the system.
In fact the system allows that if you don't like it you can move to a state and a place more in line with the way you like things. And never have to go to places you don't like the way they run things.
So all in all those old white dudes did it right.
We have programs to help the poor here and in fact our poor live better and have more then most anywhere in the world.
Where are you getting the poor here don't have food, water or shelter here?
Hell they have big screen TV and cable also, well most do.
Because they want to make shit loads of money and the fastest and "easy" way is crime, especially drugs.
This kind of violence is concentrated to small areas. I've lived in different states and different major cities and always felt safe. Even in Chicago, the violence is concentrated to certain areas. I've been to that city a lot and never had problems. The nice areas are safe to visit. I've also lived in Austin, Dallas/Ft Worth Area, visited San Antonio, Houston, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Tennessee a lot. Ive always felt safe in these cities. Unless you plan on visiting the ghettos of these cities and get involved in turf wars, you'll be fine
Don't let the headlines fool you
I once gave a black man a high-five. I wasn't scared.
I don't know what you're talking about but I wasn't talking about black people.
This is objectively untrue!
It appears that American poor are incarcerated at a far greater rate than other nations, to what would you attribute that?
Me neither.
@oldshadow started going on about lazy people and drug dealers trying to make easy money.
Oh, I know what the idea is. The idea hasn't worked for two centuries, but they keep clinging to the notion it will work. The US has over 300 million guns, and the highest rate of gun violence anywhere in the world. The guns aren't protecting anyone to any significant degree.
But everyone knows that. They may be less familiar with what happened in Australia, after strict gun law reform was introduced in 1996 following a string of mass shootings: http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2530362.
I will let anyone and everyone peruse that study (they will not) and offer pointed criticisms of same (charming, I know).
Why don't the strict gun laws work in Chicago? Is it because the criminals ignore the laws? Yes.
Your solution is retarded. You could ban and confiscate all the guns you want and the Chicago ghetto trash will still be shooting each other.
And, when you take out the shootings by inner city trash America's gun violence and murder in general don't even look bad. Ignoring the ghettos makes America have a murder rate like most European countries.
