What made GSP so ahead of the curve?

He didn't take unnecessary risks post Serra, both in his fights and in his career. That's not a slight either, he managed his career very well.

His takedowns were godlike but his standup was also Amazing. So he could take down the strikers and strike with the grapplers.

Imagine a khabib with way better stand up

1. His karate base made him harder to train for than more typical mt/bjj or wrestle/box fighters.

2. athleticism.

3. work ethic

I will admit that when the first talk of him being the best came around, I thought it was wrong. I thought that he was the prototypical next gen fighter but I didn’t think he was the best in the world p4p. He improved through his career (after he first gained elite status) which is rare and evidence of his work ethic. He would have beaten Silva head to head. Misses GOAT status because he didn’t fight bigger people and didn’t always go for the finish like Fedor did.

He was very explosive and had a karate base so he was ahead of the curve since the rest of the division was so one dimensional

Wrestlers with some striking.
Strikers with different ranges of TDD

Then and now..

Colby, Woodley, Mas.
Diaz and Kos or Hughes or Fitch or Shields or Condit..

The division has NOT evolved son.. Mas has 14 career losses and is on TS number 2..
GSP would beat him so easily it's a joke.. 50-43...

He understood that the key to winning is to shut down the other persons offence.

He made the correct adjustments to implement that core principle correctly.

He was kind of a freak athlete too.

He was extremely well rounded with a perfect body for fighting with great athleticism, he was the total package

When Carlos kicked him in the face and almost knocked his block off, St. Pierre recovered really well with some aggressive stand up seconds later. Very cool.

He was never satisfied with the status quo. Always looking to improve.
