What made GSP so ahead of the curve?

Early adopter of a world class supplement regime so he could out work out and grind any fighter and not get tired.

One difference between GSP and other GOAT contenders (Jones for example) is GSP never let ego get involved. If he thought you were weak somewhere and could be exposed, that's exactly what he did plain and simple. Jones on the other hand would go out of his way to fight his opponents' strengths just to prove that he was better than them there, too. You could argue that this difference is something that puts Jones ahead of GSP, but there are too many other factors involved for me to put GSP anywhere other than GOAT in my own theoretical list.

I see TS going for the world record on how far and how fast he can put GSP's wang down his throat. This is like the 5th thread in 2 days

How was GSP so much better than not just his contemporaries, but also modern fighters? It doesn’t make sense he was so good. Was it his athleticism? Was it his work ethic? What are your thoughts?
Grease and point-fighting...

He was the best wrestler in his division and also a really good striker. The vast majority of fighters are great at one of those things, not both.

A combination of
A. Raw talent
B. Willingness to be safe at the expense of entertainment
C. Basically becoming the best mma wrestler ever (til khabib?)
D. Fight IQ and good coaching
E. (Maybe most important) realizing he is a professional athlete, and training like it

what I still dont get is how do you train under Kru Nurse and not use any striking at all. For those who dont know much about Phil Nurse, he was a legit badass and is an amazing instructor. I know someone who trained under him at WAT here in nyc. Its like Georges didnt even need a striking coach. He basically just needed a wrestling coach post serra, what a waste. Other than lathering vaseline all over georges body when they tricked and duped bj penn in the 2nd fight and won out of utter deception, kru Nurse didnt really have an effect on Georges' fighting style.

NOt taking anything away from GSP he was undoubtably one of the goats=

but he definitely wasnt unbeatable and that far removed from many in his weight class. He took some L's

That said he was a solid athlete with great tactics

All of the above

I think he was one of the first guys to put everything together as an athlete with a proper strength and conditioning regime.
He also put himself in training rooms with the best of the best and didn't just stay at his home gym having gym wars with other MMA fighters. He built his skills and had his but kicked in training so it didn't happen in a fight.

He went to renzo's for his grappling, did his boxing/wrestling with top level guys and then added in his kicks from karate. He also sought out things like fencing and gymnastics which improved him in other ways that didn't involve getting punched in the head. Tie all that together through Greg Jackson and Firas Zahabi and you have a pretty lethal combination. The only thing he was missing was a killer instinct post loss to Serra. He went from George "Rush" St Pierre to jab,WrestleF### because it was the best and safest way to win. Quite a few of the greg Jackson/ Firas Zahabi guys seem to have gone that way and have success.

Speed. Watch his fights. His double leg is very fast.

You dickriding him is the real reason ;)
All joking aside, best WW we have ever seen.

Everyone forgets GSP had Kyokushin Karate background. He already had an established stand up style that he made minor adjustments to. Completely changing to a muay thai style was never going to happen. He made massive improvements in his wrestling and naturally leaned towards that. He still fought on his feet like a karate guy, but added a good jab and superman punch in.

When he got success, he bought himself some of the best mind in the sport and together put gameplans to dominate his opponents. GSP had the discipline to follow the gameplan to the end, which always resulted in a victory.

He never stopped to learn, motherfucker still travel the World to this day to train and learn. He then took what he learned and integrated it in his fights (the jab is the best exemple)
