What knife did you carry today?

˄Expensive!

For those that are interested, I wanted to give a short review of the DPx HEST 2.0. First of all, I love it. The blade is smaller than one would expect for a knife of this size. It comes in at 3.19", as opposed to the standard 3.5". However, the knife feels great in either standard or reverse grip. The jimping on the spine of the blade doubles as wire stripper and offers excellent control for the slashing/stabbing type motion. The G10 scale on the control side of the handle is textured more finely than most I've encountered and providess excellent grip. The titanium on the opposite side of the handle contains the visible frame lock AND a rotating lock for the frame lock that makes certain the blade stays open during hard use. Lionsteel of Italy is manufacturing the new model for them, so all worries of lock rock seen in the first model should be satisfied. The knife also features a deep pocket clip, glass breaker on the hilt and a hex bit driver in the handle. I, actually, carry a small set of hex bits that work excellently with the knife. I found that the bottle opener on the spine of the blade had an unexpected benifit. Being used to the Emerson Wave Commander, I naturally have a specific motion when pulling knives from my pocket. As I was pulling the knife from my pocket the other day, I found that the bottle opener acted in exactly the same manner and deployed the blade just as my Wave Commander does.

Good looking knife. I really like the wire stripper jimping! I have a g10 Endura 4 I carry around and I modified it by cutting a bottle opener into it in front of the Spyderco thumb-hole, which as a happy accident also works for wave deployment. Now I'm thinking I'll cut some wire stripper notches into the thumb-ramp. To date, it's my favorite edc blade I've used, held, seen, or heard of. The only thing that might make it more fun is assisted opening and pillar construction, but it's not possible with the lock on the back of the handle like it is.

I've been looking at the kershaw ken onion Shallot, I think the frame-lock would allow for modding it to be at least partially pillar construction, and the front could be waved and added to include the wire stripper jimping as well. But the blade steel is softer. can't win them all I guess.

Does anyone have any experience with Spyderco's UK Pen Knife series?

A good friend of mine is moving to the UK in January and I was thinking about getting him one for xmas.

I personally don't own one, though I may consider picking one up in the future as a "travel knife". From all observances and reviews, it does seem like a very well put together knife though I do think it is a tad pricey for what it is.

Which blade shape would you get? I prefer the leaf shaped model myself.

Dis. Clip removed, safety disabled. I love the flipper.

Ditto, I'm especially liking the "Urban Professional" with the FFG leaf blade; the profile seems similar enough to my Titanium Sage 2, which I adore.

But as I said earlier, the biggest turn off for me would be the price; I can appreciate why an S30V blade would cost so much based on steel choice alone, but it's still a non-locking blade. If they were to slightly downgrade the steel to VG-10 and bring the price closer to Delica levels, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I still like it for a "travel, legal almost anywhere" option and I just may have to pull the trigger before my next trip as I feel naked without a knife, but damn at $120 locally, it's still a tough pill to swallow.

I just got my Kershaw Rake. This knife is super sick. I will write a review and post it to the main w&t forum. I seriously can't find anything about this knife I don't like.

I didn't carry this one, but my brother just picked it up for EDC and it's pretty bad ass.

I bought that then returned it. The handle snags easily in clothes, making getting it out of your pocket harder than it should be and the liner lock feels flimsy. When open, the blade plays against the side of the handle.

What are the dimensions on that?

All the info is here:

KAI USA : Kershaw Product Details

It is pretty solid and easy to grip. The handle looks smooth but it is microtextured like a file and it holds superbly in the hand between the unique grip texture and the shape that fits the hand well.

Two steels are used for the knife-- Very hard d2 for the blade and sandvik for the back.

Four-position clip, flipper and two-sided thumb stud.

Very high quality feel to it-- no loose parts or rattles, blade perfectly centered, the liner lock is huge (high contact area also) and the blade/liner lock both lock in the exact same position on every SpeedSafe assisted open.

SpeedSafe and Made in the USA are the best parts of this very quality knife. It is my EDC now.

My two CRKT experiences have been poor also. The blade on one was not centered and a loose spacer let the blade shim a little. The liner lock was smaller with less contact surface area than I prefer.

The second knife was similar but instead of blade shim it had a misaligned handle and a pin in the handle rubbed on the blade.

Some people love them and maybe their experience has been better. Maybe I've been unlucky with those knives but I don't get the hype.

Yeah I thought the liner lock was a tad thin for such a large folder.

My wife got me this as a belated birthday present.
