What does Kamaru Usman need to do to surpass GSP as GOAT

At the very least he has to match his title defense record before we even start debating it.

Keep winning. Keep getting finishes.

He's one of the most active champs and his progression is ridiculous.

Even if you don't like him, you've got to respect him and his growth. He's a complete fighter and he's now exciting.

this. He's top of the food chain in MMA not just his division now.

Personally think after Colby rematch and a Leon rematch, if he can beat Luque, and probably 2-3 more guys, he's there (as long as they are legit top 5 guys)

He's put together a really good resume already and if he continues, he will go down as the best ever.

But, Rocky will beat him.

those stats done mean a lot. It’s just a stats fighting under a promotional banner.

look who’s he fought. All old and or small guys.

the same guys the ufc uses to build up the next fighter. His best win is Colby and burns. whothemaelf hasn’t beaten anyone and the exact same path to a title.

and burns struggled with an old ass wonder boy. Who is at the top due to the division being so poor.

for perspective Michael Chiesa is vying for a title

I would love to discredit your favorite fighters wins just as easily but I wouldn't want to look like such a keyboard badass.

Needs to beat Covington, best Edwards, besmirch Wonderboy, bounce Luque, and batter the MW title holder.

kamaru is 4-0 in title defences with 3 finishes

gsp is 9-1 with 1 finish...

gsp getting tko by 5'2 bjj manlet in his 1st title defence definitely hurts his legacy

so does his inability to finish and running away from the sport in his prime after controversial sd win that majority of ppl felt he lost.

all that taken into consideration if kamaru defends couple more times he should surpass gsp.

also why ppl bring up gsp win over bisping?

he vacated his belt and cherrypicked one of the weakest champs ever.

that would be like uriah hall become champ and then losing to kamaru

all time? needs to beat a fighter who was as dominant as matt hughes (twice), defend his title 5 more times, then jump up to middleweight and win that belt too. this, of course, is virtually impossible.

Matt Hughes lost to a 145lber in BJ Penn, that's all we need to know about that 'beast'.

He already has imo . But I know that's super contestable and I'm not wedded to it . So to just put that aside I think 2-3 more wins especially if it's in spectacular fashion and he's done it . It's not just about the number of title defenses it's also about who you face and how you win and the objective abilities of a fighter as far as one can gage them . I really do think the sports on the verge of a new WW GOAT and I'm not even a huge Usman fan .
Also Colby vs Usman 1 is just one of the funnest fights I've ever seen it's awesome how exciting he's been lately whether or not that's just cause of the matchups he's been getting
Wow, so you think Usman is above GSP... so what... he's a top 3 GOAT as well? And you aren't a huge Usman fan?

Well, let's just compare and see the differencial.

Usman has been top 5 since the second half of 2018 => that's 3.5 years.
GSP has been top 5 from early 2004 to 2014 (at least) => that's 10 years.

Usman has been n°1 of the 170lbs since late 2018 => that's almost 3 years.
GSP has been n°1 of the 170lbs from 2007 to 2014, with arguably a gap of a year with the Matt Serra reign => that's at least 6 years.

Usman has beaten 7 opponents ranked in the top 10 at the moment of the fight and 6 ranked top 5. (rankings based on fightmatrix which in that case seems fair).
GSP beat 18 guys ranked top 10 with 14 being top 5.
The thread should've ended after this post

Defend 4-5 more times against top competition.

Sorry, but that second Masvidal fight did nothing for him.

He's gonna have to match GSP's title defense record. At that point he will pass GSP cause he has no losses.

Needs to beat Covington, best Edwards, besmirch Wonderboy, bounce Luque, and batter the MW title holder.
As long izzy holds the belt I do not think those two will fight each other because of respect.

He needs to win way more rounds convincingly.

He beat an inconsistent Masvidal, and was losing rounds to a guy with a broken jaw. He also beat a way over the hill Woodley.

So, basically he needs to be a better fighter.

Get a couple more finishes and stay undefeated - already ahead of GSP on belt finishes which is what makes a fighter great.

Easy Money

few more fights. 7-0 with finishes is better than 9-1 (with that loss being the biggest upset in UFC history).

The bisping vs gsp thing is tricky. Usman going up to fight Adesanya / Whittaker is not the same. Better equivalent would be going up and beating Gastelum or something. But no one would care since its not a title fight.
