What do you REALLY think of Colton Smith?

The thing that annoys me about the military talk is how they try and make it sound as if somehow the training he received gives him some kind of edge.

It doesn't

I spent from 2004-2012 as an Infatryman in the Army and nothing I did gave me an edge as a potential fighter, lol. The only thing they do is this thing called combatives which is essentially watered down Gracie jujitsu designed so just about anyone can do the basics like a kimura, arm trap roll and other ultra bare bones tactics.

The only COOL thing the Rangers do over that is this shit called Lines training or something close to that, which is basically just creating distance to draw your pistol. What an amazing tactic for the octagon, lol.

Word.

I was in the marines from 04-09, and I made brown belt in MCMAP, and it was mainly basic judo throws and simple chokes. Some bayonet and rifle training, and very simple strikes. If someone tried to fight MMA off that alone, they'd be in trouble unless they were in much better physical shape than their opponent.

He reminds me of Chael Sonnen in that he does a good job controlling fighters and positioning. Not much for finishing. Of course, he doesn't enjoy the same skill level as Chael and I suspect the first fight he is in with someone who can keep him off them he will get knocked out

Hes a 24-year old Staff Sergeant. You have to really kiss some ass to get pushed that quick even for a combat arms MOS.

Yeah. You have to be Johnny Rico pretty much all throughout. ENlist directly after high school. Get meritorious e-2, then get guide e-3 in boot camp, and pretty much give out handies to your NCO's for a year or 2 to pick up corporal. I'm going off Marine Corps ranks. I never memorized the army, though I'm sure they're similar. If staff sgt's the same it's e-6. I wouldn't be surprised if they promoted him for recruiting purposes where he was on national television and everything.

I don't like his face, his nappy shorts or his fighting style.

He's OK though.

Everyone is whining about the nut shot. I don't see anyone whining about him getting hit in the back of the head of a few times. He gave the ref a chance to intervene. He didn't. Colton continued fighting. I think he's pretty tough.

Does being in the military give you an edge over the average guy? Generally yes. Just about anyone who has ever been in the military has had some kind of physical training/toughness put on them. They've usually been in their fair share of street fights. Does it mean you can beat up UFC or quality MMA fighters? Absolutely not. There are some good athletes in the military but usually if someone is a world class athlete they don't sign up with the armed forces.

Other than just giving someone a basic drive and work discipline, it's not really going to help you out. I'm sure once you hit a certain level in MMA everyone is tough and no one is going to fold easily. Just about everyone is in some kind of decent shape. Really, I think Colton winning the TUF finale was a small miracle considering how I've seen former military perform at that level of competition. They almost never do well.

I see Colton winning a couple of fights but I don't see him beating the top guys due to his lack of punching. As far as the combat training you get in the military: the posters are right it's a couple of throws, etc. The stuff Colton is training these guys for is a little better but I get more out of boxing and just wrestling/sparring around with guys than the military ever showed me. I think it was like 8 hours of training. Maybe 3 moves were useful.

Don't much care for him, and that's strictly based on the TuF 16 Final Fight. Didn't watch any of TuF 16 outright.

The guy is an opportunist in a negative way.

Didn't watch the card, i'll do it later. but from what i remember he looks like a LW right? cannot imagine him in the ufc ww division

Cant really imagine him in the ufc lw division either. Match him up with massaranduba.

I'm indifferent on the guy, but I really have no clue why he's getting so much heat. People call him a blanket? Get real, he was active almost the whole time. I see the arguments, but I just think they're weak. Whatever though, guys done more with his life in 25 years than any shertard ever will, given two lifetimes. I just want to see him fight a natural WW.

To obnoxious with his army bravado. I respect people that actually go to war but there's no need to be so arrogant about being a soldier. Not everyone is impressed by how many people you can kill.

So far as I can recall, he is the only guy to win TUF without stopping a single fight - not to get into the house, any of the tournament fights or the finale.

Literally, four straight decisions from the elimination round through the finale.

It's got the makings of a fighter that will be painfully hard to watch.

what sucks worse is now he is always going to be on the main card.... >.<

I think he's talented and hard working. I also think he's boring as whale shit. It's not that he's a wrestler. It's that he's a grinder. He spent 15 minutes trying to secure a choke when he probably could have finished the fight if he'd worked some stiffer GnP or went for other subs. Ricci probably spent 11 minutes of a 15 minute fight on the ground and took absolutely no damage. That tells me the guy isn't trying to finish the fight.

I think he's way too arrogant and there are other fighters in that weight division who are also great wrestlers, but can also strike, and aren't nearly as arrogant. I want to see what he's like after someone hands him a loss. Sadly, that will probably be a while as he'll be able to dry hump his way through most of the division until he starts running into guys like Kos and Hendricks.

dull but effective.. he's won now and this opens up many opportunities for him, let's see how he uses that to develop before making any lasting impressions

They keep talking about how he keeps us free every single day.
...

If Colton is a representation of the American army, well, sad day for those who have had to deal with them..

Colton to Afghan child: "Hey little buddy! High five!"

*Afghan child goes for high five and Colton takes him down and holds him for several hours*
