Whoops my bad. I didn’t know when this story took place. Yeah I understand how the video footage won’t be released for a while, that’s totally understandable. This shooting happened on the 14th, one day before your post. Footage will never be released that quickly. In some cases it’s not even up to the police to release it. If there’s any outside investigatory body (as there should be imo) then it will be up to them whether to release the footage or not. A judge or the prosecutors could block the release. There are also privacy concerns: the family would need to ok the release and could potentially block it. In DC I know it’s up to the mayor whether to release footage.
Now I have no idea what the situation in wherever in MD this is, and I’m not looking it up right now. I’m also not saying this shooting was justified as I have no idea. But it’s not so simple as to say, “the cops refused to release it so they must be lying.” There have been cases where footage came out later (was released long after the shooting) that vindicated police.
It would be better if there were more formalized and consistent rules regarding the release of footage. But you also have to consider this proliferation of body cams is still pretty new.
