What books are you reading?

Ouch. Beer is probably cheaper and far more enjoyable... just saying.

Sorry to hear man. I have never personally heard of much in the way of success with marriage counseling but hopefully something positive comes out of it for you and the mrs.

To be honest the therapist is a good guy and he's trying his best.

Lord of the Flies - its a book that was assigned in grade eight, a little over twenty years ago. Even though it was assigned it wasn't read. It brings up a lot of repressed memories for me.

Reading it today, I had an idea of what it was about. I had watched the movie 20 years prior. I didn't know it would be this well written.

Here are some nice takeaways and cool quotes.

Nice commentary:
"No one can be reduced to a single human trait. We are all partly Jack, partly Ralph, partly Piggy, and partly Simon. We can choose which of these identities to cultivate. It's true that the Beast lives inside us, but we can accept this, and in doing so, we can see ourselves more clearly. This in itself is a form of triumph, this alone is cause for hope."

Quote#1
"Somewhere over the darkened curve of the world the Sun and Moon were pulling, and the film of water on the Earth planet was held, bulging slightly on one side while the solid core turned."

Quote#2
"Then the sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone." pg232

I would definitely recommend reading it for those that haven't done so. Here's the audiobook that I used.

Yeah, just without the boobs and weiners........ It's more of a smutty kids cartoon from the 80's with the double entendre........ Mixed in with 90's Sun news paper dear Deidre.......

You know... I can't really argue with that description.

Yeap, you both have to want it to work, otherwise your just chucking time and money down a hole........ We could've had 13g of Coke by now.... That'll definitely solve the problems for a bit......

Maybe try taking 13g of coke into your next counseling appointment... at the very least, it would be memorable.

2000ad Strontium Dog graphic novels
Blood Moon, Life and death of Johnny Alpha, Kreeler conspiracy, Traitor to his kind... so many good stories. Ezquerra was a legend!
Have you read this one?

I haven't picked up many books for along while, so I've started reading "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius.

Things are a bit rough at the moment and I'm finding his Stoicism useful.

What are you reading?

Just recently finished reading “Meditations” myself after a cancer diagnosis and surgery. Thought provoking book and helpful, I mean to track down Epictetus’s stoic books as well. Stoicism helps me.

Currently, I am reading the Jack Aubrey novels, Master and Commander series. Found the entire series at the thrift store for $2 a book! Quite the steal and so far the first book is interesting, love the wooden ships and thundering cannons era naval stuff.

I hope you're on the mend.........

Re-reading the Book of Blood series by Clive Barker (I read them in the late 90s, but I am craving some good horror short stories).

I also made it half way through a book called The Reddening - not a bad book, but given how little spare time I have, I didn't feel it was worth finishing.

I got the new jack carr book on my readermadoo for later tonight. Only the dead I think it's called. I really enjoy going on adventures with my boy james Reece and been looking forward to it since I finished the last one.

If you want another great book that was mandatory Grade 8 reading, but most people skipped, read the Chrysalids. Really great book that you can definitely appreciate more as an adult.

Just finished the First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie and working on his next trilogy called Age of Madness. Another Sherdogger recommended these. It is a good light fantasy series with interesting and well written characters.

Also reading Lawrence Block's The Burglar who Painted like Mondrian.

Oh and on book 3 of The Witcher series. Really enjoying these as well.

Don't think I've read a book in about ten years now.
