Dark Souls 3

Okay, now I'm in the groove. Beat a few more zones and bosses, and now I'm not so shy to peak around corners. I've turned the corner. Beat that piss easy "Crystal Sage" boss, and now I've just been exploring. Went back and beat that "Tree" boss thing, which was surprisingly easy once you know where to hit him. Beat some side Demon boss in some random area that ended up being some weird dead end(but I think there's a way to open a door by him, just haven't figured it out yet).

That swamp area is still a bit of a mystery, because I don't think I have the appropriate items(poison resist), to get into the deep waters. I've got a ring that helps, but it can't handle the deeper waters. Not quite sure what to do there, but it's alright, because I've got so many open paths to explore now. Level 41, with a +3...special sword(can't remember the name), and a +4 Dragon great shield, and they seem to be doing the trick.

It's funny though. It feels like I've played for 40 hours, but I'm only 14 hours in. LOL. Anyways, I'm in the zone now.
There is an item in the very first area that will help you with the deeper waters, but it's not necessary.

I didn’t like Lords of the Fallen or Nioh. Haven’t tried any others, but I know what you mean.

"The Surge 2" was the closest, but it was missing the clever level design and enemy layout. It wasn't "hard" in a natural way, like the Souls games. It was cheap. Not terribly cheap, but enough where you started to notice the game's cheap tactics.

It had some really cool ideas though, that should be built upon. They're close to cracking the code, but not quite there yet. Good enough to at least give it a look though.

I heard "Code Vein" did a decent job, but I don't trust the anime geeks to give an honest review. The game could be shit, but they just liked the art style and big cartoon titties, for all I know.

I'm a total Souls/BB addict, so if I'm not on some NG+ run, or playing a mod like Cinders for DS3 (awesome btw), I'm on the hunt for a new Souls-like experience

I've tried every noteworthy souls-like out there I think, and Lords of the Fallen is my fav. I was mixed at first, as most of the weapons suck, but once I got a good one (can't recall which, some greatsword) I was able to really appreciate the atmosphere/graphics. The armours are so badass and meaty too, It feels like a Warhammer meets Souls thing.

Nioh 2 would be my second fav. It's highly improved from the first in every way, especially level design. It has the best combat by far too, I love my switchglaive. The skills/combos you can develop, along with the guardian spirits, makes things incredibly deep.

Even though they increased enemy types, and improved level design, I'm still getting tired of the same opponents, Yokai namely, and how they level with the player, or the area. Old hoppy always gives me trouble, hits like a truck too lol

That serpant bitch can get fucked too!

Medieval Japanese architecture is just far more limited than western, even in fantasy settings, so that's getting a bit boring too. I hope the DLC takes us somewhere different, and gives us fresh enemies.

Team Ninja was talking about having their next game be Norse mythology based, that could be cool. I think Elden Ring is taking that approach, and with God of War already doing that, I hope it doesn't get saturated. I'd like an Arthurian based Souls game.

Code Vein was pretty good too, had some memorable bosses. I really enjoyed the deep character customization, and builds you can make that you could swap between easily. The level design was abysmal though.

I'm taking a Nioh 2 break, and might jump back into the Surge 2. I only played a bit of it. I stopped for Code Vein, and never went back.

Any other Souls-like gems out there, that aren't sidescrollers/isometric? I probably played it, but I'd like to hear them anyway, ya never know!

I got so desperate, I tried making Skyrim Souls-like. Spent about 3 hours trying to replicate this guy's video. It's pretty good, but still feels too floaty.

I just couldn’t get into Lords of the Fallen. Someone on Sherdog once called it “Clunk Souls” and I thought that was kind of fitting, as everything just seems so slow compared to say Bloodborne.

I might try again some day with a lighter character, because the heavier guy was just too damn slow.

I finally finished Gears Tactics. That game starts off like it's going to be a lot of fun, but about halfway through I felt like every side mission was a slog; and the story missions weren't much better. Comparing it to other tactics games that I've played recently: it doesn't have the strategic elements of an Xcom (nor the attachment to your units) nor does it have the character progression of an FF Tactics clone (something like Fell Seal: Aribter's Mark). As a result it pretty much completely fails to scratch that theory crafting itch where you come up with the best layout for your base, a cool character build/progression path and then see if it really is delightfully overpowered.

It's a shame because the production values are there, and--unlike Xcom--it's relatively bug free. I only encountered a couple and they were all minor, things like texture bugs. The technical elements were there but the gameplay definitely wasn't. Hope they do better if the game gets a sequel.

I’ve been playing city skylines on the Nintendo switch. Just a fun way to kill some time here or there. I don’t own pc or I’d just go that route, but it seems like the port to the switch worked out nicely.

Well, I've pretty much been pigeonholed into this annoying as fuck part, where you have to run past a chained up giant in some cathedral, to get to the next area. Every time you want to just progress to the next area from the bonfire, you have to run past this douche bag. It's so dumb, because you can't even look at him, to dodge his stupid attacks. You have to listen for his grunts, but even that isn't all that reliable. You have to run and pray, and it's not as easy as it sounds. Dude just smashes you randomly, and consistently. You pretty much just have to get lucky, which is bullshit. This is the "hard" game design I can't stand, because it's just cheap. He's just a bitch of an obstacle, and there's nothing you can really do to avoid it. You have to run through him, every time you die.

Luckily, it's a small section, but still. I'd rather have three tough enemies on these ledges, than one that is seemingly impossible to fight or avoid. Unless you manage to luck out, and get through the section unscathed, he'll either kill you, or make you waste at least two Estus flasks on his bullshit, and the next zone ain't exactly a walk in the park, so it just works as a handicap. Total bullshit.

I eventually got past him one time, and could tackle the next area. No bonfires of course, and I ended up getting killed by some mini-boss monster, who was way weaker than I thought, once I started hitting him, but it doesn't matter now. Died. Time to run past that stupid fucking giant ogre again. Oy vey...

I think you can actually kill that giant with arrows or magic safely from some room iirc. It just takes a while.

I got no magic, and I couldn't imagine how many arrows it would take to kill this dude. I haven't tried simply hitting his hands though, so I could just be rushing it without thinking, as DS usually gives you a practical out to these situations. I was at the end of my run, just trying to find one more bonfire, so my irritation might be reflecting my last minute frustration of a goal I couldn't complete.

Just finished AC Unity. Its a solid game. I know it got a lot of crap for being glitchy at the launch but its a solid addition to the franchise as it stands now. Funny, it only really glitched once for me and it was in the first minute of gameplay I got stuck running into a wall I couldn't get out of. I was like "OK here we go. This is what everyone was talking about". Lol

The irony is if he's at the area I think he is, said giant drops Hawk Ring, lol.

To follow up, yep, I'm a dumb ass. I eventually fell down to the ground level by accident, but it didn't kill me. Took an Estus, and just slashed his legs. He's dead.

Then I pretty much explored the whole area, unlocked all the shortcuts, had that Onion Knight trick me, beat the second giant, and now it's just me and this motherfucker with a Great Sword. I'm not so good with these guys. It appears that I suck at both using the great sword, and defending against the great sword. He's not even a special guy. He's just one of those knights that are all over the place, but something really fucks me up when they have that sword. I even skipped another guy in that swamp area, because I just can't deal with that shit. No escape from this guy though. Time to nut up.

Been playing Metro Exodus. Trying to finish it before it leaves game pass.

Beat Nioh 2 last night and logged in today for trophying + aimless co-op romp. Playtime was 260h and I'm retiring the game until the 30 July DLC releases at lvl 150.

GOTY for me. I think of titles this kind as historical fiction so seeing the detail paid to Japanese history from tea culture and item, material origins to hidden map locations teaching about regional mythologies is such a treat.

Deep combat, so much so you sometimes forget everything you've got synergising at any given moment. The turnaround for title given how recently the original was released and how much was put into it or improved upon is astounding. Reckon the original was a surprise hit so served as a proof of concept for the prequel to see more a budget and resources. Really happy to have preordered and supported Team Ninja.

Came to love swordsmanship in this -- both dual- and single-wield, whereas I'd avoided traditionally-bladed WPNs in the original. New WPNs are hit-and-miss but the subsystems that make up combat as well as options available near negate that as any kind of shortcoming.

Switchglaive, especially with switchstancing ATK nuances, is next-level; was an immediate kinship for me given its similarity to Burial Blade but felt easy-mode at points later so I would draw something else to keep a pucker-factor in play. Loved dual-sword parry techniques as well as single-blade's blanket demand for discipline in use, which was refreshing.

Late-game introduction of so many armour sets threw me for a loop and dropped me on my head. Like the original, loot is drank from a fire hydrant so I started feeling bogged down in the UI for too much of late-game, which was not cool.

Will share some ideas for a follow-up in our Nioh thread but wanted to put general thoughts down here. Great game. Should be coming to PC in time for Christmas 2020 so keep your eyes out if on the platform.

e/ Threw follow-up remarks down here.

I’m thinking about getting M&B bannerlord or sekiro but I can’t decide which one.. I never played the first mount and blade so I have no idea what I’m in for with that, and am worried it might be “too much” for me since I don’t put nearly as many hours into games as I used 2. I get bored after a couple hours and want to play something else or stop gaming period for the day.

Sekiro looks amazing, but I tried playing dark souls 3 and it took me an embarrassing amount of time to beat the tutorial boss lmaoo so I’m worried sekiro might be too hard for me honestly..

Any advice on these two games?

IMO Sekiro is the toughest of all the Fromsoft games, simply because there are no ways to stack the odds in your favor, like summoning others to help you, or simply just grinding for experience. It's you vs the game. No tricks.

However, it does play differently than Dark Souls, as it's more of a twitchy action game, more akin to Ninja Gaiden, so if you got the reflexes it might actually be easier than the slower more methodical combat in Dark Souls.

But yeah, it's rather difficult, so if you don't like the steep difficulty of From games, Sekiro is probably the last game you want to tackle. It's no joke.

Thanks for the reply, I think I would actually like the faster gameplay more tbh. Dark souls felt very slow and way too reliant on absolute perfect timing on rolls. I’m prolly just bad at those games tho but I would probably put more time into getting better if I liked the combat more.
