Was O'Malley "extra" locked in this fight?

Who do you guys think is a better accomplishment for the Serra-Longo gym at this point, Merab or Weidman?
Probably Merab. I like Weidman and he actually had 3 title defenses vs. Merab's 2 title defenses so far. But all of Chris' title defenses were against older legends (Silva rematch, Machida, Belfort). All of those guys were between 35-40 at the time and clearly not at their peaks.

Weidman also fell off really hard once he lost, and left his prime around age 31. We'll see what happens with Merab. He looks great right now, but at 34, his reign is probably limited in a young men's division.

Sean did a wonderful job at defending against the takedown. He wasn’t 100% successful but he did a great job
Nah. Merab had a 40% takedown percentage in the first fight, 41% in the rematch. Statistically the only improvement was on Merab's side, even though I would chalk that up to margin of error.

Merab had 6 of 15 takedowns in the first fight over 25 minutes.
Merab had 5 of 12 takedowns in the rematch over 15 minutes.

Almost as many takedowns in 10 less minutes. This is also only Merab's 2nd win by finish in the UFC. The other was a TKO over Moraes. Merab has only finished guys who have finished Aljo.

I'm really apprehensive about the answer for some reason (can't really put my finger on why). But I have to admit that you guys might be right about this one.

Merab is a terrible matchup for him. He needs to move up. He'll never be champ with Merab ruling the division.
It's so easy to be a bad match up for his style though. The lack of athleticism and physical strength is his biggest weakness.

Sean literally has one good win in his entire career. He's just not that good.

If he moved up he would get absolutely stomped. He's a fine top 10-ish BW.

I will say this--Merab needs one more solid title defense before this is really clear. Umar was a very legitimate title defense. The Suga rematch wasn't. Like I said, Weidman had 3 title defenses, but all his opponents were older. Machida was still a pretty good fighter, but not at his peak.

If Merab loses his next fight then goes on a big losing streak and retires, it won't be very clear and you could make a case for Weidman.

He got overpowered badly by Merab, moving up would be a bad move.

It's more about Merab's relentless engine than being a super powerful grappler. It's just that he'll shoot for 40 takedowns and not get tired. Nobody at 145 is a Merab.

Also, Sean has been talking for a while about how the 135 cut is brutal.
