Warhammer 40k

Transfers and touch up done, finished the dead necron on the base and it turned out pretty bad ass too.

Easily the best model I've ever painted, very happy with the "end" result.

Looking solid. There's a couple spots where the gold could be cleaner (upper wings on chest, rims of the shoulder pads) but it's a good effort and not something you'd really notice playing on the table. Oh, also: make sure you've sealed that bad boy with some sort of varnish or else you'll start shedding transfers. Transfers are very fragile just on their own and even a gentle rub against an edge can damage them.

Did a clear coat of matte finish over the transfers as soon as they were flush and dry.

Ya there is definitely some touch up work that I could do thus the "end", lol. As I look it over I notice little bits here and there but I'm still happy with how it looks, haven't painted a space marine in over 20 years and this is by far the best one I've done.

Busy day at work so didn't get much time in today, but started on a necron overlord, still very rough.

Necron Overlord Progress, shouldn't have put it together first or I would already be done. So many tight angles to get paint into, just a pain in the ass.

You can safely ignore this post, I just want to bitch:
Ugh. Painting some of these parts suuuuuucks. I've got the bronze and silver done on everything except the weapons (saving the airbrushing of the wash+varnish to do everything at once) and it's looking like they are going to end up taking as long as the bronze/silver on everything else combined. They have a ton of individual spots that need to be done, lots of fussy details with many small faces, as well as some parts with large surface areas to cover. I've been maintaining my 20-30min daily painting sessions (my New Year's Resolution was to paint every day, even if it was just a single dropper's worth) and at this rate it's going to take at least another week to get through the guns. I don't dare up my time to get it done sooner because burnout is a big risk for a sufferer of major depression such as myself.

Oh, while I'm at it, what are people's thoughts on flame jobs on Warp Runners titans? These are all official GW schemes over the years:

Some of those are much more hot-rod than others. I'm going to have to do a bunch of testing before I commit, but I think doing something like what's on the FW Warhound group and maybe even going with baby-blue pinstripes like this:

So I'm about to pop my Space Hulk V4 bought on day D and then left forgetten for years in the next days and try to assemble all the figs.

Haven't touched a fig for 20 years and not used to the plastic.

Some advices from aficionados ?

I intend to paint them.

Damn dude, your improvement is really impressive. Keep it up!

Woof, this was nine days ago and I only just now hit the halfway point. Dunno if the second half will go faster now that I know exactly how I want to do it, but I may not finish my wash/varnish of all the remaining parts before the end of the month. Oh well. At least I should be pretty well done with the whole project by the end of March. For a base I'm thinking of getting a 3/4" piece of plastic, cutting it into an oval, routing a fancy edge on it, and then putting a nice piano-black finish on it. It should look fancy without taking too long. Maybe even get an engraved brass tag made that reads "Detrahere Xenos - Legio Astorum". A scenic base would probably look better over-all, but given the size (24"x18") it would take forever and be expensive (I don't have any of the materials to do high quality terrain work).

I've decided to try an experiment. I'm making a 3D model of a banner for my titan as an alternative to trying to draw one out, get it printed, and try and make a floppy piece of paper not look like complete ass. Once the layout is done (and I'm close) I'll try and distort it so it looks like it's waving a little. Here's where I am so far:

EDIT: got the base model essentially finished and the waving deformation works, I just need to figure out what shape I want to go with. Here's a mild swaying:

So 40k is getting it's own MTG expansion. I haven't played in a long time and don't plan on getting back into it for this, but I was thinking about what colors the factions might end up as. Here's my take:

IG: white/black. Order, but a distinct lack of regard for the value of life.
Marines: white/red. Extreme discipline and lightning fast strikes.
Sisters: white.
Mechanicus: blue/colorless.
Eldar: blue/red
Dark Eldar: black/red
Tau: white/blue
Orks: green/red. Resilient, fast, passionate for conflict.
Tyranids: green. Super green, explosive growth and everything is a living construct.
Necrons: black/blue. Basically undead with super-tech.
Chaos Marines: black.
Chaos - Khorne: black/red
Chaos - Nurgle: black/green
Chaos - Tzeench: black/blue
Chaos - Slaanesh: black/white. Yes white, one of Slaanesh's defining factors is conflicting duality and the corruption of societal institutions.

Ok, so, an offer for anyone interested

(who has access to a 3D-printer):

I've recently published a bunch of miniature megapacks. We're talking oodles of minis, more than 100 in total. I've only printed a fraction of them myself, and when packaging them I ended up cutting some corners to save time. I've run some stress tests and gotten some feedback from customers, but I'm still a bit worried there might be technical issues with them. Maybe certain slicing softwares can't handle the cut corners, et cetera.

If anyone itt would like a heap of free .stl models (that look relatively okay-ish in a certain light), I could give it to you in return for you printing a couple of the models and telling me if you experienced any issues.

I'm mainly interested in hearing about technical issues, like models not loading properly in the slicer software, supports not being added properly et cetera- anything out of the ordinary.

I've got three megapacks to choose from. You can get all three of them if you'll reciprocate by printing at least 3-4 models (preferably one from each megapack).

I've included some pictures in this post, and links to the products if you want to look at more images or read more about the models.

Respond itt or pm me or whatever if you're interested.

I started trying to learn Blender last month and, after trying some basic stuff and watching a bunch of tutorials, it made me realize how much I hated the workflow for the kind of thing I like to make (mostly mechanical stuff). I might take another shot at it later and focus on learning the sculpting tools for organics but for now I'm going back and sort of re-learning Rhino. I'm pretty much entirely self-taught on Rhino so I'm starting over with basic tutorials. I'm also checking out the new v7; it's got a bunch of new features and improvements on existing commands. The biggest change I've noticed (haven't played with the new SubD modeling method) is that they've implemented Blender's open source Cycles render engine. So finally Rhino can natively produce high quality physical-based raytraced renders.

All that said I thought I'd share one of those fancy new renders of the part I've been working on: I'm back on my Warhound 3D project! Woohoo! I'd really love to have it in a place where I can start printing Warhounds for when I finish my Warlord but I'm not setting any goals at the moment. Just steady plugging away 20-60min a day and see where it takes me. Here's the Vulcan Mega Bolter I started a few days ago:

It's the last of the weapon arms to be blocked and I think I'm going to do a finishing detail pass for both mars and lucius versions of all four weapons (other three already blocked from when I was working on this project previously) before going back to do head/body.
