I'm going check that book out , those guys were great fighters, great days for boxing , going to watch those fights with my son one of these days.
Yeah, it's a decent read. I use to be a hardcore boxing fan, even worked in the business at one time. The dark side of those rivalries is you can sense the downfall of boxing emanating from that series, as star power really took over, and Leonard used his popularity twice to get the leg up on Hagler and Duran.
Leonard - Duran 1 has never been matched since in terms of skill on display in boxing in one ring.
Hagler - Hearns is up there for greatest short fight of all time.
Leonard - Hagler for most controversial decisions of all time.
Duran- Hearns for crazy KO.
The other not so good part is Hearns, Leonard, and Hagler were predominant fighters of the 80s and Duran a fighter of the 70s. The age and weight difference were severe handicaps for Duran. Duran is clearly more of an all-time great than the others but had the worst head to head record of them all. Timing in boxing is everything, and Duran among the casuals didn't get his due given these high profile fights were when he was most past it in terms of time, and smallest in terms of size, and the no mas debacle. All things considered he truly was the best of them. Worse yet he was marketed as the "brawler" when he fought Leonard to sell the fight, which the casuals ate up; a completely idiotic label.
Videos like this do justice to the immense brilliance of his technique. The "little" things he does that go unnoticed by casual fans is off the charts. The way he did them so naturally and effortlessly is truly a testament to greatness.
