I'm Canadian, so take this FWIW being as how I'm obviously not paying American taxes though the basic principle is the same, but I think it's sad and a huge strike against a person to accept the benefit of improvements in the economy (presumably under a Democrat, according to your anecdote) only to switch allegiance for the sake of continued greed. My financials have improved very substantially in the last 8 years, and if anything, I have even more of an appreciation for the need for social programs and paying one's share of the burden.
At the same time, it would be fair to complain if the burden falls disproportionately upon those at the lower end of the economic spectrum, but that is a separate issue from complaining about taxes going up as soon as you're making more money.
I know you're a pretty reasonable person, so I'm just going to say that while I totally get where you're coming from, almost no one wants to be "handed shit"; when it's the difference between living on the street begging and being "handed shit" would you prefer the former? When it's the difference between having to choose, meds or food, or both meds and food, would you prefer the former? As a society that values reducing suffering and improving quality of life for all its citizens, shouldn't it be a duty to ensure there is shit available to be handed out when needed?
To my way of thinking, there's nothing wrong with a little personal selfishness along the lines of "not wanting" taxes to go up, but let's say you were assured the people at the top of your organization, the heads of yet larger ones, and the people making great amounts of money from them, were all paying their share, and that you could see the positive results stemming from said tax revenue, would you be more willing to accept an increase? I.e. let's say you could be assured your taxes were being used to help the country as a whole and that tax avoidance was being effectively addressed, would you still object if the alternative was lower taxes resulting from the election of an odious criminal?
