There's two sides to this: the legal, and the practical. Ultimately, you have to live with this person, so you have to live with this person in some sort of harmony, meaning it might be good to just acquiesce to this request (which is the gay part of having room mates). However, it's really important that you understand your legal standing because you could either be in the driver's seat, or fucked.

In Canada, only one name can be responsible for a lease, even if two names or more are on the lease. That person is the first name on the lease. All the others are basically there for show. I very much doubt that you are responsible for 50% or 40% of the lease. Someone is responsible for it. Find out which one you are.
