There's a gap in this train for me, but isn't this about the decline of extended-family connections? I think liberalism could play a big role in there, in that it is inherently opposed to tribalism and nepotism, but @Kafir-kun also provided a cultural-evolution-based explanation that seems plausible (which, of course, doesn't mean it's correct).

Throughout our history ("our"=humans here), we've developed rituals--food-processing, tool-making, divination, etc.--that no one engaging in them could explain the benefits of but that were actually extremely important to our survival. A liberal in most times and places could get killed--either by offending the tribe or my skipping steps in those rituals that didn't *seem* essential but that we now know are. But that last clause is important. We have reached a point in our cultural evolution where we can make liberal arguments for stuff described here (and more in the book referenced). It might be that there are good liberal arguments for deepening extended-family connections.

You're talking about social relations but something similar happened in medical science. From Hippocrates until the 19th century people knew that dead bodies were bad. They didn't really know why but they were bad, maybe because of the spirits of the dead or the miasma.
19th century doctors thought that was bullshit and dead bodies weren't bad by themselves as long as the person wasn't sick with a (visible) contagious disease.
Long story short many healthy looking corpses had germs, the doctors did autopsies in these bodies and then delivered babies and killed the mothers while the midwives who didn't go around messing with dead bodies had a much higher success rate.

The question then is, if we do not have arguments against a ritual should we just ditch it because it makes no sense?
That's not even getting into the value stuff.
Liberals may deny it but they have their own values that are not necessarily rational, for example, the importance of equality among unrelated people.
Maybe we just feel it's right to help your extended family and that may be good enough. That's the line I go with, I don't really care about helping the poor in Africa compared to helping a brother. There are obvious evolutionary reasons for that but I can't prove it really helps in the long run.
I'm probably the kind of guy that would get killed in the past, btw, since I despise rituals, including some I later found out made scientific sense.

Unless he had an arrest warrant for something a lot more substantial that is fucking absurd. If they really arrested the guy for selling water, those cops should be ashamed of themselves. People sell beer on the street here in holland without a license on hot days, or days where there's some event, and nobody gives a fuck: because why should they?

I don't think you know what you're talking about, and are doing the exact same thing you're accusing others of, and are going to blindly accept any decision that goes against this kid, because you're biased as all fuck.

I'll take that as you not having read the complaint and what these jokers are specifically calling "defamation." They actually try to claim that quoting Phillips itself was defamatory. The judge of course said as much, that publishing opinion is not defamation, but maybe you didn't read about the ruling either.

I saw and heard some things around this incident that got my "oh shit here comes a lawsuit" alarm going, but none of it came from the Post. It's possible that other news orgs or people did defame him. But that doesn't mean you just get to sue whoever for whatever.

So based on highly selective enforcement (going well beyond these examples), I guess I made at least one mod's shitlist. And to my knowledge that means no thread-starting for a month. That means I won't be able to fulfill my promise as President of 20, two-week threads. That means I've no incentive to continue making new ones. Works for me, since nothing's gonna be more fascinating than the Zodiac case and nobody wants to have a thread made on their behalf. Except @VivaRevolution with the mailing drive. I wanted to, we just couldn't agree on one that made sense.

PS. Since what I quoted was in quotes I assume it's sourced elsewhere, public knowledge, and fair game. But I've been wrong before. Sooooo....

I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me in any of the three rounds. All those who acted as thread-starters. All those who participated as panel-members. And everyone who entered a thread and participated with good intentions.

The opportunity meant a lot to me. I learned some things and grew as a person. That said, I'd like to apologize for not being of the personality and character to be more of a uniting influence. I'm sorry I wasn't able to regularly maintain the diplomatic tone and content befitting what I aspired to.

In my defense, I made great effort to follow through, never held anyone's political views against them, maintained transparency, and did oftentimes treat people with more patience and respect than I otherwise would have.
