Yeah pretty much, but then again that's far from being rich these days. That's just being comfortable and having a nice home, nice cars, nice trips, and being able to save and invest and send your kids to a good college. Far from luxurious.

I used to date girl who who's Dad made that much. We were hanging out with my buddy who's laborer with the city making like $30k a year and for whatever reason it came up what her dad made a year and my buddy goes "Damn I didn't realize you're family was rich".

She tried to explain that they weren't rich because her parents boat didn't even have air conditioning until her grandmom died and they were able to use the inheritance (It was 7 figures but not sure exactly how much) to upgrade the boat lol

She was also salty that her grandmother only left her $50K and left the rest to her parents.... but her grandmother paid her college tuition... at fucking NYU lol

$250k a year doesn't make you rich but that interaction always stuck out to me as being hilairous

@Jack V Savage

Who are your favorite journalists right now? And I don't mean analysts/commentators like Yglesias or Chait.

That's a good question. For hard journalism, I tend to think in terms of institutions. There are individuals who stand out. I think you'd like Laura Sullivan. Patrick Cockburn is really good. Robert Fisk. I've personally dealt with Joe Nocera before he moved to sports (where he's solid, BTW), and he's sharp.

People in those situations don't realize exactly what they have.

That's one of those "once you see it, you can't unsee it" things. Look at this:

Got 18 likes from dumb posters. Rationality makes one inauthentic and bad. When you see defenses of Trump that cite his "honesty" (he lies all the time, but because he's vulgar and irrational, that's seen as more authentic), that's more of the same. Likewise for people who said that Clinton wasn't "honest" despite her record of rarely saying untrue things. Ultimately, that's what the immigration debate is about, too, which is why liberals are wasting their times by trying to bring logic and evidence into it (as I did in response to @ElKarlo). It all comes down to impulse with these people and a certain kind of "authenticity."
Yes, Hillary Clinton was probably the most honest person in America. Have a good day, jack.

It's fucking creepy once you make the realization. We're in pure dasein territory now. It is true because I experience it as true.

I just finished lunch but I'm hungry again already.

When I was young I wanted to be like, filthy rich.

All I want now is to own my own damn house.

Try living in Toronto. Homes are about 900k now, 550k for a studio condo.

There are very little jobs, unless you know people or have family and a shit ton of our homes are bought by foreign 'investors'

Rent here is now 1800 a month for a 1 bedroom basement in a bad area.

LOL

btw boats have air conditioning? Defeats the purpose imo.

God, that movie was so fucking bad.

The characters of the kids (Clint Eastwood's) are great representations of how shitty and superficial the character development was.

Yes, Hillary Clinton was probably the most honest person in America. Have a good day, jack.

Hmm, he definitely didn't say that. He said that she didn't lie often, which she didn't, relative to the political average and certainly relative to the average for modern Republicans and certainly relative to Trump who is an unbelievable deviation from the rest of the political world.

But because you couldn't disagree with him saying "she's pretty honest" and implying she's much more honest than Trump (this frankly can't be debated in good faith) you exaggerated his statement to the absolute max to create a straw man: that Hillary is "the most honest person in America."

The fact that the dude wears an old Tennessee Vols snapback (like the shitty before it was cool to wear a snapback type snapback hat) makes these videos more hilarious to me.

Our yacht doesn't even have air conditioning and we had to dip into our trust to replace the teak! Honestly, it's tough being us.

Teak is like the "air condition on a boat" of woods.

Do you think she's more honest than an average person? Please say yes.

This.....this made me fucking angry.

I don't know those people.

Seems like there is a remarkable lack of journalistic talent at the highest (visible) levels. I have a lot of respect for Anderson Cooper, I think that Jake Tapper is pretty good, and Chris Hayes is okay, but most others are pretty awful. Like Chris Cuomo, Stephanie Ruhle, or Don Lemon.

I've had many interactions with the rich and mega rich growing up. I'm not going to get too deep into it for obvious reasons, but I have a few memories that will always stick with me. When I was 9 years old my mother dated a man who's parents were friendly with the Fords family. These people lived in a multi million dollar mansion. You would think they were poor the way they talked.

That tennis court they own? What a shit hole. The boats parked by the lake, ugh, some poor people with a sailboat is parked next to them. I was bewildered by these people as a kid. I grew up very poor so it was quite something to watch people with money contest with one another over luxury. If I had anything fun or funny to say about it all, it was nice to be underestimated. One of those rich kids pulled me aside one day (After swimming in their indoor pool with a water slide) to play some chess. The kids father told my mom "My son is teaching your son to play chess" meanwhile I beat his son back to back on the board.

The take away is that wealth is retaliative, at least mentally to most. It's fascinating how some people can be so greedy and swimming in money yet you would think they are broke by the way they speak and view the world. At the end of the day we are all very well off just being able to drink clean water, living relatively safe lives and sit at a computer for our 'jobs'

If I were rich.....

GIVE ME BOTH! Just let me send the stock Raptor (the pure blue one) to Hennessey to get a V8 put in it:

Do you think she's more honest than an average person? Please say yes.

That's not really an intelligible comparison since the average person (who does lie a lot) isn't constantly making declarative statements to a national audience. But I think she's more honest than the average US Congressperson, yes.

The thought is that if automation, robotics and AI render human labor obsolete we'll need the government to just give people money to survive (imagine the fat people in WALL-E).
