Tbh I only found out that coon was a racist term after watching the South Park episode that references it and only after someone explained it to me as I didn't really get the joke.

There's a difference between genuine ignorance and willful stupidity. The former is generally taken as a teaching point, the latter is a major point of ire.

I don't know about you, but trying to downplay an event with "Well only they use it, and it's old, and nobody really talks like that anyway" is in the latter for me.

So what was it about 2 black Finnish people frequently using the word? Were you just straight-up lying? Or misremembered it?

I can only speak about my (extensive) experience of scourging the web, but I have never witnessed a "white" person, except perhaps a troll (and even then they'd probably rather use the N-word), refer to a black person as a "coon".

However, one does not have to go to great lengths in order to witness that word being used by African-Americans on the internet, often in reference to someone that they deem to have "betrayed their race".

So even worse, you base your knowledge of US social strife on what you read on the internet...but then come to an American centric forum acting like you're an expert on what we should and shouldn't be offended by?

Honestly, you should have stopped at the black people. That's almost as goofy as people thinking the scandanavian countries are hellholes because of online scuttlebutt.

Or keep injecting yourself into things, that's your prerogative. You're going to look as goofy as our resident canucks for Trump, but that's on you.

And what "event" are we talking about? A meteorologist mis-speaking?

These are exactly the sorts of "events" that I was talking about, in my previous post. Which are the reasons as to why the term "racist" no longer means anything, because merely mis-speaking will lead to you losing a job over some racial BS.

I haven't acted like an expert on anything. If someone is capable of putting forth a counter-argument, I'm more than willing to entertain their ideas. That's why I put myself out here and challenge my established notions.

I have done that for a better part of a decade or two by now, debating with people world-wide about the affairs that are taking place in their countries.

No offense, but not too many Americans, even if they may reside at the center of their social strife (whereas I do not), are willing to go to the lengths that I have gone, in order to get to the truth of the matter.

Based on my experiences, I have not heard one white person ever use the word coon, whereas I've seen it used more frequently in African-American circles. Take it for what you will. I'm sure it won't change your position on the matter, and I do not intend to, anyway.

There are nonzero instances of that happening. The ones that come to mind are the two local news anchors who accidentally said "Martin Luther Koon." It's a known slur used by racists...but it's also a completely understandable slip of the tongue since it's just repeating the vowel sound of the previous word. I think everyone who isn't a great speaker and who gets cases of muddle mouth sympathized with that.

And based on my experiences actually living in the country, it's a racist term used quite liberally by older white people in "polite company".

So is there any wonder that a Finn on the internet might not have the depth to influence my experiences living in the American south? Furthermore, might you reconsider that your "online research" failed you due to y'know, not living here?

Obviously he did not intend to say what he said on live TV. Whether he misspoke because of fumbling his words, or because he regularly uses that sort of a derogatory remark about King behind closed doors, in either case, he did mis-speak.

Anyway, it was my intention to throw out those statements in order to get somebody to "bite", and help me get up to date with the racial language in the United States. It's treaded ground at this point.

Hang out with a lot of old white people, do ya?

Have I ever made the claim that I have a greater depth of experience about living in the American south, than you do?

You seem to take it as an offense that I had an opinion on the matter, despite not being an American. Should I take offense to any opinion you hold about a matter not concerning America?

Obviously we won't get too far debating about matters, if that's the kind of a stance we are going to take.

There have been a few threads about Finland on this forum, but I've never gone to any of them acting like a "big-shot" over anybody else. I just state my case and move on. If somebody is uninformed on a matter, I'll straighten them out, or not, depending on the mood.

I just find it hilarious that someone who tried to deflect that "coon" was even a slur in rotation is now telling us that racism has no meaning.

Especially when his deflection is based on internet bantz.

Hang out with a lot of old white people, do ya?

If they want to teach me their ways, i'll gladly take the lesson.

I'll grow up like a gremlin and merk them when they least expect it, but that's just business.

I don't have an issue with you stating your opinion. I simply told you why your opinion was goofy and how you being goofy in that instance will make you goofy on other related subjects.

If you want to extrapolate that to "You shouldn't talk about America", that's your prerogative. My opinion on your thoughts about racism haven't changed either way.

What do you think would happen in North America if Canada abruptly chose to nationalize all its water rights, including the Great Lakes, and stop supplying fresh water to the US due to scarcity? Unlikely, perhaps in this particular case, but you could see similar things happen all over the globe, and not just over water.
Sure like I said, war could happen over something like that and its not that abstract a thought as there are already disputes over water supply in the world like between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan over the Nile River. But like I said, I think its more likely that states collapse into civil war than fight each other. If not a civil war then proxy wars where each side supports some insurgent group against the other.

Maybe I have too much faith in the current international system's ability to prevent a war between states but that's how I see it.
Spousal rape
So even for rip that was a bridge too far.

I found out when I posted a thread with the word tycoon in the title on here and it got censored.

You made a claim. I'm just wondering where you're getting it from, since you clearly wouldn't be in the "polite company" you speak of. So where exactly are you hearing all these old white people use "coon" regularly?

I literally just told you lol.

fwiw, I've heard people use it. Not regularly, but it happens.

When did I say that it wasn't a slur?

I said that it's a relatively ancient term that's no longer in popular use, and nothing that I've seen contests that. If some older Southern "gentlemen" use the word, I'd say that it just reinforces my view.

The people that I communicate with, obviously represent the younger generation. I feel safe in saying that "coon" is a dead word to them.

The N-word is still used more frequently, and I believe that has a lot to do with it being adopted by pop culture.

fwiw, I've heard people use it. Not regularly, but it happens.

Keep in mind, heretic was in disbelief that people have vehement opinions on the civil war and jim crow.

I live in the south. Those confederate flags aren't just a fashion accessory lol.

Cool.

I mean, you're not convincing me, but cool.

Does anyone else feel like the US flag kinda.....sucks something awful?
