Keep at it, man. This happens to everyone, you're doing well and you're doing it right. Sorry to hear about this one, though.
I responded with an email thanking them for interviewing me and asking what I could improve for future interviews/applications...

IF I don't hear something when I'm at my bar shift tonight I better not take a shift drink... or I'll be JUST angry enough and be just far enough past sober that typing out "coward" and sending it will seem like a good idea.

Oh, three of my buddies in various parts of the country (one in SLC who I would live with if I moved out there) that were military
"Tell us where your interviewers live...."

First off, sorry man...

Second, personally, I don't ever waste my time looking at candidates I will definitely not want to hire. But sometimes, your candidate 1A won't take the offer, so you gotta be super fast with 1A in order to make the offer to 1B without them feeling they are a backup solution if 1A says no. I think their candidate has already said yes.
Part of me thinks the legit reason they didn't want me is they found someone closer to Pierce County or that already lives down there.

For me I'd have to move and I was upfront with them at the interview when they asked how soon I could start was "I'd like at minimum 2 weeks to give to my current employer and allow me to move down here"

Add to that my interview was on the 1st of March and they wanted someone to start on the 24th (which is a Sunday). Then they added that I'd hear back end of this current week (which I obviously have) or early EARLY next week and I wonder if my face did that "um... that doesn't give me enough time to give notice" look on it.

Half Japanese... other half his Eastern Euro with a very Slavic sounding last name.

My fucking mom who is the full blooded Japanese:
"You weren't enough of a minority for a WA state agency to hire you to fulfill their minority quota. Fucking Jay Inslee"

That is weird...

Wait a sec...

I thought I old you to tuck that Thor hammer into your shirt.

Semi-lazy, non-presitgious jobs at the very top of one's field ftw.

LOL, I turned it into a keychain that was on my lanyard that I left in my backpack while I was down there.

that's like half the people I know.

I thought you worked at a gas station?
Yeah, but he was the best god damn station attendant you've ever seen. Top of the gas class, if you will. People would wait in line to have him clean their windows instead of going to other pumps. Got tipped so handsomly he made more than his boss.

Don't overthink it. I've hired dozens of people over the years and it's hardly an exact science. Could be you, could be them.

I've also bombed some interviews myself. All you can do is go to the next one and put your best foot forward.

@Limbo Pete give me some career advice.

Turned down an interview at a highly prestigious place last month that serves the extremely wealthy. Feel a little inadequate to work there and don’t want to deal with super rich patients with high demands and expectations.

Right now working at a semi lazy, low prestigious job and get pampered and fawned over. They desperately fear I will leave them. Got women making me coffee and bringing me food every single day. People offering to pick my kids up from school. Lots of super nice people.

Have a new interview in 2 weeks. New job pays 35-115k more per year, involves less work, more days off, would get adjunct appointment at a top university (currently at a less prestigious one), but I wouldn’t have all these nice people taking good care of me everyday.

If I leave, I will make more money, but I might dislike the job, and I will lose all the nice services I’ve grown used to. How to decide????

Are you the type to regret decisions?

Like, would you be likely to regret not making such a move in a couple of years?

Just because a doctor takes a job at a gas station doesn’t take away the fact that he’s still a doctor.

Working in academia sucks. High expectations, lots of pretentious people, low income. I don’t want to deal with that shit. I don’t need the ego stroking. I know what I bring to the table and have a couple awards to indicate such. Don’t need to work for peanuts at Harvard or Stanford to be an expert.

Yeah. I often look back on missed opportunities. But I also beat myself up over past mistakes. Very neurotic.

Luba's story crafting reminds me of a scene in the movie "Lincoln" where James Spader's character tells another guy "Don't just grab at the highest branches. They sway in every breeze."

That’s an interesting quote. What’s the context?

I know.

I used to get sad when I was denied after an interview but nowadays given experience in my field I get pissed.

I always have to think of this piece of advice:

In your case, you seem to be caught in the 'big fish in a little pond' type situation. Personally I would decide based on factors such as: would you have to move? Would you be able to learn something new? Is your current cozy situation tied to few people (who might leave and change the equation)? And would there be a potential career step after a move and would you desire that step after the next one at all as an eventual option? Finally, is going back an option?

Money-wise it sounds like a no-brainer (unless the 35 are more likely to be the norm), irrespective of your current pay that sounds like a valid reason for a move.

would you have to move?
Longer commute.
Doubt I would learn a lot.
Never considered the fact that my current coworkers could move on. That would definitely affect my decision, but I could cross that bridge when I come to it.
There is potential for progression.
Going back would be an option. I assume they would fill my position right away, but there are always openings.

Sounds like I should give it a go. Worst case scenario is I don’t like the work or environment and have to spend a couple years there before changing back.

You definitely need the ego-stroking, it just takes the form of you acting ascendant in front of the doubtful mortals, or whatever. It's odd, but it do. My comment was that it's silly to declare yourself at the top of your field if you're doing a low profile, lazy job.
