I think his argument kinda falls apart here. If his first cabinet had so many impressive resumes from a wide variety of people, that doesn't really sound like identity politics, and I'm not entirely sure how identity politics applies here: Judy was undoubtedly qualified for her position(s). Indeed he seems to imply that the argument could have been made for the appointees, and goes on to say that the explanation for their appointments was the disappointment. But then he proceeds with identity politics, as if it would have been different if Trudeau had a different explanation than [it's current year]. Don't buy it.
He wouldn't be in his position if it weren't for trying to fuck with a potential criminal corruption investigation, full stop. Or perhaps more cynically if he had just left her in her position, to find some other realpolitik solution. If anything, the ''identity politics hire'' is the lone bright spot in this situation, and playing him like a fiddle.
