Wait what’s Salo?
"The controversial poet, novelist, and filmmaker Pasolini transposes the Marquis de Sade’s eighteenth-century opus of torture and degradation to Italy in 1944 where four corrupted fascist libertines round up nine teenagers and subject them to 120 days of sadistic physical, mental and sexual torture."

Al Bundy and Homer J. Simpson are great TV dads, too. Bundy was unappreciated by his family, but whenever a fight broke out, they always had each other's backs.

I think they are just very different types of movies and it depends on what disturbs you. I’ve never seen Come and See, I actually just googled it. But it sounds like it’s a realistic depiction of Nazi atrocities, while TCM is more of a slasher movie filmed in a uniquely disturbing style.

I’m not sure what movie I’d say genuinely disturbed me. I’d really have to think about that. Usually anything involving sexual assault is very difficult to watch. Even a scene like the one in American Me leaves me very unsettled.

You seen A Serbian Film?

I've seen both and I wouldn't really call Texas Chainsaw that disturbing, especially compared to other horror films. Come and See is just a nightmare but I find Salo to be more disturbing, as a comparison.

Guess it depends on when in life you see something. I saw TCM pretty early. Salo was later, and it bored me more than anything. Although shit eating is fuckin' disgusting, I'd put this one above it on the disturbing scale.

There's no easy way to have this conversation without implying some assumptions, but can we at least acknowledge the fact that the people who are historically obsessed with maintaining their "culture" - which is generally tied to secular liberal democracy - are the exact same people who have repeatedly tried to defeat secularism, defeat liberalism, and defeat democracy?

I mean, these people who hate Muslims because they're not secular and democratic are the same people who are gleefully supporting a party trying to disenfranchise voters on transparently farcical bases, are gleefully supporting the legalization of discrimination on religious bases (and were infuriated by religious discriminations protections!), and have at no point in history stood up for democracy in any context.

I don't think Bald1 belongs to this group - that is, I don't have any evidence that he would support a fascist anti-democratic movement - but the Venn diagram of the "preserve our culture" group and the group I just described is nearly a circle.
See, people conflate criticism of an ideology with hatred for those who hold said ideology. The reason I'm against Islam is because I'm liberal and it creates the most illiberal societies in the world. That doesn't mean I hate my neighbor or Ahmed, my nieces best friend who's more like family than a friend.

Here's a story I told KhabibK -

My uncle was a card carrying, mid level member of The Party in Communist Hungary. He pretty much raised my dad and the family loved him as a man. He spoiled us kids and was always there for us. He's a also the reason we (I was a kid, so not like I was a part of the decision making process, so I can't take credit) abandoned all our possessions and had to sneak out. He was stuck in an ideological black hole as a Communist. Fuck Communism, but I loved my uncle.

A person is more than a sum of their parts. I can think some of those parts suck yet still like or admire or respect the person. Sometimes a person is unbalanced and lets a portion of their being rule their whole identity and sometimes said portion outweighs others. And that's when ideologies become dangerous.
