The Cosby Show was a comfort food show for me growing up, I loved it so much. I often get the urge to watch it now but I think it would feel really really weird.

I think most people rank Come and See as the most disturbing film ever made. I wouldn't go that far but it's not one I think about rewatching often.

Never heard of it that I recall. Wonder if “most people” have seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I've only seen some previews and clips and I still think it might be the most horrifying shit ever made. I don't think I actually want to watch it and have that shit in my head.

I started having problem with some things I was seeing and hearing around the Laura Jane grace switch. I was like wait what doesn't he have a wife and kid what about them and people went nuts at me.
He was a woman when he fathered those kids by inseminating a female, you dirty transphobe!

I say have at er! That doesn't mean I'll reject objective reality to substitute subjective one. If I have to accept a trans person's womanhood then the least the people asking me to do so should accept my liberalism.

I had a similar trepidation with Roseanne.

@Cubo de Sangre and @Confucamus are you both considered right wing posters?

Only by those who need to lump people into groups and assume superiority over them because of that. I'm pro gay/trans rights and pro gay marriage. Polyamorous marriages as well. I'm against censorship and religion in politics. I've always felt strongly about border security and stopping illegal immigration and that seemed to be baseline across the board. Now it's considered racist. Saying that I don't see skin color is now considered racist and right wing as well, despite that being what I was taught in school all my life and fully agree with to this day.

My views have remained relatively consistent from back when I voted for Obama twice and was considered a liberal. The only issue I've changed my mind somewhat on is abortion. I've always been pro-choice and I'd still vote for abortions to remain legal, but I've changed my mind on whether it's murder or not. Hope this helps.

Personally I am also completely against any type of policy that differentiates based on who you are (though I have softened my stance a bit regarding female leadership quotas). But that's also the perspective of someone who is in what people would call privileged.
So you softened your stance on literally the worst, most unnecessary version? I guess its different since I'm American and I don't see the need to privilege white women over blacks who have a far more troubling history of oppression at the hands of the state. In general I think blacks and Natives should be the only groups that get any access to that kind of preferential treatment given their unique history of oppression here. The lower caste quotas in India are another good example of reasonable quotas, probably the most worthwhile instance of that kind of preferential treatment. Fuck your "meritocracy", there ain't no meritocracy when Dalits have been shit on for millennia

Sorry yeah I literally asked that question so I could post this and then it snowballed lol.

I think they are just very different types of movies and it depends on what disturbs you. I’ve never seen Come and See, I actually just googled it. But it sounds like it’s a realistic depiction of Nazi atrocities, while TCM is more of a slasher movie filmed in a uniquely disturbing style.

I’m not sure what movie I’d say genuinely disturbed me. I’d really have to think about that. Usually anything involving sexual assault is very difficult to watch. Even a scene like the one in American Me leaves me very unsettled.

I get what you guys are saying, but to be fair I'm more concerned about culture than skin color.

@JDragon @Jack V Savage

There's no easy way to have this conversation without implying some assumptions, but can we at least acknowledge the fact that the people who are historically obsessed with maintaining their "culture" - which is generally tied to secular liberal democracy - are the exact same people who have repeatedly tried to defeat secularism, defeat liberalism, and defeat democracy?

I mean, these people who hate Muslims because they're not secular and democratic are the same people who are gleefully supporting a party trying to disenfranchise voters on transparently farcical bases, are gleefully supporting the legalization of discrimination on religious bases (and were infuriated by religious discriminations protections!), and have at no point in history stood up for democracy in any context.

I don't think Bald1 belongs to this group - that is, I don't have any evidence that he would support a fascist anti-democratic movement - but the Venn diagram of the "preserve our culture" group and the group I just described is nearly a circle.

Yeah, something about laughing at a mass rapists antics creeps me out. I really, and I mean really, didn't want to believe the accusations against Dr Huxtable, but fuck that guy.

I've seen both and I wouldn't really call Texas Chainsaw that disturbing, especially compared to other horror films. Come and See is just a nightmare but I find Salo to be more disturbing, as a comparison.
