That has nothing to do with whether or not the market will suddenly no longer require low wage workers. It's a competition. No matter how motivated people are somebody has to bring up the rear. The economy relies on having people to fill those roles.

Given that we are pretty much all renters with no way to opt out of the market, we probably owe each other some minimum standard of living.
Everybody can’t have a mansion with a pool in the backyard. So what?

Instead of crying about rich people and how evil they are, try to be like them.

Dumbing the system down won’t work, we have to make ourselves better. Make ourselves more marketable. Responsible people should look at government assistance as not an option or a last resort, not just a way to get a check.

Yes, people should be embarrassed to be on government assistance. It shouldn’t be easy or readily available. Yes, people on welfare should be subject to whatever type of testing the government sees fit. Government assistance should be temporary and it should only deliver the minimum amount of support to survive. It was never meant to be a lifestyle.

Success in this country isn’t a guarantee, but the opportunity is there.

And before all the yappers jump in with the “that same opportunity is not there for everyone!” I’ve seen all walks of life do well. Did they all start with the same conditions or tools? No, but anyone who wants to succeed can. Some may have to work harder or have more obstacles, but that’s just life.

Just imagine if everyone had that mentality?

I think everyone should have that mentality. But that doesn't stop me from thinking that there ought to be a societal plan B in case shit hits the fan. It's really talking about two different things: the one is talking about how people should comport themselves in a society, and the other is talking about the basic parameters of that society.

In any society, from mad max to socialist utopia, it's generally best to look after your shit. I'd still rather have the socialist utopia than mad max lol.

Here in CANada the people in their late twenties of my age group all talk openly about our pensions that will never exist. CPP (Canadian Pension Plan) is a ponzi scheme for boomers. Not sure how bad it is for you guys down south.
That’s a long standing joke down here too how Social Security will have no money for my generation cause of Baby Boomers

Hense my lol at Trotsky’s idea that Social Security runs efficiently.

This is one of those instances where I wish culturally we were closer to Japan and other countries where the previous generations well-being falls more on the kids of the older generation than society as a whole.

Japan has something similar to our social security system in place but a ton of the responsibility falls to the children of the elderly.

Granted, it can cause problems too as in Japan debt gets handed down after people pass on... Hell, my uncle passed away beginning of this summer and my mom and I are going through the problem of basically renouncing our Japanese citizenship in order to avoid being saddled with his outstanding debt.

Yikes

Yeah. I love my uncle but he fucked over my grandparents pretty good and then tallied up a ton of debt himself too.

Borrowed a ton of cash from them to start a business that failed... never paid them back (and I mean like USD 6 figures type cash) and then wasn't there when my grandfather passed to help his own mother and died with a boatload of other debt from hospital bills and shit cause he smoked like a chimney.

Damn that sucks. I don’t like the idea of debt being passed on to innocent relatives.

It's how Japan rolls though annoyingly.

We're going to have to sell the family house that my mom grew up in in order to try and pay some of it off.

It was during a sad time when my grandfather died but I have some good memories from that house.

I'm only talking about meeting basic needs, not sure what you're on about. Saying "you can do better" is just taking an individual view and ignoring the reality of capitalism. Most people want nothing more than to earn a decent living, that's not some special trait that eludes everyone who gets an earned income tax credit.

Anyway, I'm no fan of a bunch of government programs either. The best known cure for poor is cash. I like a progressive scale negative income tax to cover pretty much everything.

Government has functions like national defense, taxes to operate, even temporary and restricted welfare. But their level of involvement in our lives is out of hand.

The problem is that once the gov't gets involved in creating and maintaining private property rights, it necessarily takes on obligations to people harmed by the system. And having no gov't and communism creates its own problems.

The problem I have with that line of thinking as that to prefer the Mad Max society you are almost certainly presupposing yourself to be one of the powerful few to dominate. If you are one of the many who are the recipients of the raping and pillaging (statistically likely, I'd wager) then that socialist utopia probably would sound pretty appealing.

Now if you could be that feral boomerang kid though, yeah that would be the shit.

I want to be one of the ones spraying my mouth with silver spray paint yelling "witness me"

The US is so g'damn dominate in space / mars missions that its mind boggling -- just did did their 26th Mars mission of which they are 20/26 on success rates -- if landing, orbiting mars was a Free Throw, NASA would be in the top 50ish of all time

What do you understand "efficiently" to mean? I can't see how SS could be any more efficient.

Yeah, no idea what @Captain Davis was saying. You can just search "social security efficiency" and bam first result:

It's hard to beat Social Security. A big part of the benefit of Social Security is that it is very efficient. The administrative costs of the retirement portion of the program are just 0.4 percent of what is paid out in benefits each year.

Of course, I imagine he'll try to change the topic from distributional efficiency, which was very clearly the topic and an area where the private sector is consistently whooped in the areas of healthcare and retirement, and onto something about incentives or something or other.

I didn't mean to imply that, I was just going off his usual out of reality based arguments. Of course you aren't. I'm just confused why someone like him would be against anarchism since he is a nihilist himself. And these guys can preach about government dictating morals, which we can agree on for age of consent etc. The issue is these same lefty types want men in girls bathrooms and all kinds of other detestable things as well. They just hide it in their language.
I think some of these guys are having a hard time dealing with the fact that something theyve spent their entire lives following and studying has been a total sham the entire time. They need our help and compassion in these trying times as we work to move our countries in to the age of truth
