A gigantic government owned 401k plan seems like a potentially huge conflict of interest, not to mention that the market is subject to volatility that a safety net should not be.Sure, you could privatize it. I'd have to research the idea some, but on face value the idea that the government becomes shareholders in corporations is unsettling to me. The scale would be enormous.I think a conflict of interest could be avoided with a well-structured approach. But your other objection is good. I'd support an SWF with a UBD (dividend), and that would have similar issues, but it wouldn't put the elderly in poverty in a downturn.
