Better Call Saul is absurdly good. It has the more accessible tone and faster pacing of BB S2, combined with the refined cinematography and production value of S4.

I have no problem with the statement.

Also, speaking of how Breaking Bad dropped off in its final season, does anyone else feel like they're taking crazy pills when people say they liked Game of Thrones Season 7? I mean, ever since they ran out of book material the show has dropped off in terms of dialogue and internal plot logic, and become more an action show, but Season 7 was literally some of the worst, silliest shit I've ever seen from a show that was/is critically acclaimed.

Interesting that you bring up pacing as the biggest complaint I've heard about BCS is its slow pacing -- of which season 2 was really slow; but, that doesn't mean the story telling, character development and acting wasn't on point.

So, now I'm going to be a hipster and say I stopped liking GoT after season 4 (albeit I really liked some episodes of season 6) Yeah S.7 was bad but I'm giving them a pass since this is AFAIK really uncharted territory for any show - where a critically acclaimed book becomes a criticality acclaimed show, but the show will finish before the books so they are creating a separate story line from the books -- it's a cluster fuck but one that I welcome because I really don't give a shit how the show ends so long as it doesn't ruin the literary series and it seems like the two are mostly separate at this point.

I haven't seen any of the new season, but I think it's a lot better than Breaking Bad so far. It couldn't exist without it and BB is why I like it, but still.

Not sure I agree that The Wire is better than Breaking Bad, since for me they're both just excellent, indispensable, and worth binging and rewatching.

The Skyler and Marie school of eye bulging and hammy acting knocks BB a few points below The Wire for me.

But I definitely not going to argue anyone who wants them to share center podium.

I do disagree slightly with BCS not needing BB as precursor -- I don't think watching Jimmy's transformation to Saul would be as good if you didn't know just how deviously awesome Saul is in the breaking bad time line. And

Gus wouldn't be nearly as cool in introduction in BCS without knowing his story in breaking bad

There are some posters in the Mayberry who really are like movie geniuses, though. Couple of karate-watching Roger Eberts.
A lot of them sniff their own farts too though.

Who is worth checking out there?

IDR their names. I don't post there often, but I sometimes read their exchanges.

There's one pretty insightful poster who I recall has an absolutely terrible habit of multi-quoting his posts into like 20-part novellas. Might be @Bullitt68.

I swear, the only complaints I've ever heard about BCS, is that it's not Breaking Bad.

My perception might also be skewed by the fact that I binge watched it. But I think that, generally, the pace of the story is slow, but the pacing of the direction is fairly up-tempo.

I'm most annoyed by how hostile to criticism the showrunners have been, defaulting to "hey, the ratings are YUGE, so obviously we're doing it right," and refusing to concede that they abandoned the nature of the first 4 seasons.

So, is The Godfather II mediocre, as claimed by @Trotsky?

Of course not. Neither The Godfather nor The Godfather II are mediocre. I do think that they're both a bit overrated, the former especially, but they're both far from mediocre.

Funny enough, I just rewatched the Seinfeld episode "The Bris" and all the Godfather references had me wanting to rewatch both of them, as it's been years since I've seen either one. Now this is just extra incentive to rewatch them and update my opinion on them...

BTW, what the hell is this place? Just an OT shoot-the-shit thread for the WR?

What are your thoughts on the Indiana Jones films?

I haven't watched them since I was a kid, but they weren't my style then. And I've never had the appreciation for Spielberg that other viewers have (outside of a select few big hitters like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List), so I would predict that I wouldn't like them now.

Speaking of Spielberg, he almost hit it out of the park with Bridge of Spies. The first half of that film was excellent, before it devolved into a two-dimensional action flick.

Raiders is the gold standard for action/adventure movies, imo. You should give it another try. Plus, when you don't like it, I can shit on you.

Dark Knight is one of your favorite movies, correct?

Yup, but TDK was grittier, more contemplative, and, most of all, contained more elements of tragedy than can usually be found in the action-adventure genre. Which is why it's probably the only action movie I would put in my top 50.

I also have a very low tolerance for cheese and camp, of which I always assumed those movies had a fair amount, just from my recollection and the famous scenes.

Raiders isn't too bad on that front. It's pretty grounded for an adventure film. Steer clear of the 3rd one though.

Agreed on the tragedy elements. I watched The Dark Knight again in the last month, and the finale really stood out for me as perfect. The narrative of the film leads you there, and it delivers like a gut shot.

I don't mind the Nolan-verse Batman flicks up until the last like 45 minutes or so of TDKR and it just basically took the shotgun and shot itself in the face standing on the edge of a 2000 foot Scandinavian fjord and fell off the side.
