Anybody else notice that there's a sort of intellectual valley that has formed, and is filling up fast? It's like the Rogan/Rubin/Harris/Peterson/Shapiro valley. People who go in there start saying things like "one might say that..." while constructing these unassailable little moral forts and constantly misapplying analogies while missing the point of everything. I hope that this turns out to be a net positive, but in the meantime, it's fucking annoying.

They use more careful language, have a veneer of civility, and seem to be able to form a cogent argument occasionally. So that's good. But that group is also really, really hard to keep on point. Not very curious, but interested in making little moral forts and defending them.

Peterson is the most incredible in that regard: that he gets so deeply into arguments that are not deep whatsoever.

Like, the guy is by most metrics probably smarter than 95% of the population. But he's also, in a very real way, kind of an idiot.

It was from your boy ODB. I was trying to figure out Rod's post, and I ended up catching one of ODB's making the argument that I described above. Inga (not allowed to tag her) made a version of this, saying, essentially that any level of revenue declines are fine, but she opposes deficits. That strikes me as fundamentally dishonest. Just say, "I hate gov't spending, but deficits are just dandy." I mean, that's still stupid, but at least it's honest.
