From a old friend of mine I served with. Reposted with his permission.
Here is something I wrote up and have been passing around. SF
I didn't want to sit on some info that might be helpful to others. I've had some medical training and spent some time is places in the world where epidemics went through, am part of the military/law enforcement response, and am familiar with historical plagues. I don't claim to be an expert but know enough to listen to experts at the right time. Everyone hopefully should know all the basics by now. Look for fever, fatigue, dry cough, diarrhea, and loss of sense of smell. If you are sick stay home, but that is actually too late because asymptomatic people can infect others and that is why people should be wearing masks. Covid-19 has what you call a R0 factor of 2.2 meaning that each new person on average infects 2.2 people, the seasonal flu in contrast has a R0 of 1.2. About .1 of people die from the seasonal flu each year, Covid-19 may be between 1-2 percent it is hard to say right now. So it is much more deadly than the seasonal flu and spreads more easily and more widely. You should be physical distancing from people. If you or someone you look after has a heart problem, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory condition, an immune problem, or are aged, meaning over 60 they are good candidates to be floored by this or killed by it, and soon there won’t be enough medical resources for everyone, so people will be triaged for care.
Hopefully people have figured out that it isn't just the elderly and those with underlying conditions or comorbidities that need to take care. 1 of 5 of those in the hospital with Covid-19 are in the younger cohort. Plus if you are a decent person you don't want to infect someone who may be susceptible. Once this escaped China and their rigorous methods it was always coming our way. Italy has been losing around 700 people a day for more than a week and Spain has been catching up. That is likely where we are headed in about 2 weeks on the coasts and 3 weeks in the here. Except we have 5 and 1/2 times the population of Italy so do the math.
Here are some thoughts and some of my practices.
I have gone to a green, zone, red zone, yellow zone plan. This is used in Nuclear/biological/chemical situations and is appropriate for this pandemic.
Green zone - inside my home where we wipe down surfaces daily with alcohol wipes, wash clothes, and bathe. This is where hopefully there is no virus.
Red zone - contact with people outside the home and common surfaces. I maintain my distances and am avoiding people at this point. N-95 masks are for the Red Zone or for if you get sick. I stocked up 4 weeks ago to avoid the rush and the tardy. My girls are staying home and in the yard/park completely. Red zone is where you get Covid-19.
Yellow zone - this is where I decontaminate if I have been in the Red zone. Also where I let things coming from the Red zone cool off for 72 hours. My Yellow zone is my screen porch.
Any outerwear (jacket, gloves, hat, pants, shoes) that I wear into the Red zone gets left on my screen porch. It is unclear how long it can survive on clothing. If you wear gloves you should deglove like a doctor, careful not to touch the contaminated part of the glove. I then decontaminate my hands and doorknobs with alcohol wipes as I come into the house and then I wash or shower. Your Yellow zone could be a porch, a garage, a car trunk, or even a closet is better than nothing.
Any mail, orders from Amazon, or groceries "cool off" in the Yellow zone for 24-72 hours before they come into the Green zone. The reason I do this is the Covid-19 appears to survive on cardboard for up to 24 hours and stainless steel and plastic for up to 72 hours. Even after I let the material cool off I cut away the outer packaging and leave it outside of the Green zone. This is the time for the OCD to shine, this is why they are in the gene pool.
Every time you venture out there is an increasing chance you will get Covid-19. For this reason it is worth considering a grocery delivery service, which you could let "cool" off in your Yellow zone. Grocery stores are full of the contagious by now and gas pump handles are likely to be as well. If you have to go I would recommend going early. A grocery delivery service won't be perfect but you can avoid greater contact with people and common surfaces. Target, Lunds/Byerly, Cub have grocery delivery services. I would expect delays with the service so plan ahead.
I locked my mom down with two+ months food and 3 months prescriptions four weeks ago (there is a decent chance of disruption to supply lines and we unwisely source much of our medication from overseas). She is 87 and would be very unlikely to make it if she got sick. Many of you care about people like this. No one can visit her now. There simply will not be enough medical resources shortly and the elderly are not going to get full treatment. Think through your prescription situation.
Obviously a lot of people weren't getting this early enough, making good decisions in a timely manner, or mistakenly imagining it wouldn't affect them or not caring if they got other people sick. We will be paying for those mistakes for at least several months now. We have had inexcusably poor planning for this, an entirely predictable event.
80% of us won’t have much trouble with this if and when we get it. There aren’t tests available for most right now so unless you are really bad the Doctor will tell you to self-isolate in your home. You should try to have a separate room from others in your household and use a separate bathroom if possible.
By now hopefully most of you are teleworking or simply staying at home, unless you are medical, police, military, or work in logistics or the utilities. If not, you are behind the herd - and the herd is slow and stupid, it always is. The herd also needs to listen to the early warners which in this case is the epidemiologists. We need to flatten the curve or our medical system will be overwhelmed.
One last note, if you are religiously inclined as I am or superstitious as I am not, you should not engage in magical thinking about what can or can't hurt you and others. In this phase of this kind of thing people present magical cures of different kinds. Colloidal silver, sage, etc. No New Age nostrum or internet gimmick for the gullible or desperate is going to help - just alcohol wipes, N-95 masks, soap and water, and avoiding one another. Follow the guidance of doctors and epidemiologists and pray and meditate at home for now. Church was never about a building. Martin Luther wrote an instructive letter on a plague he confronted and for the secular minded Camus wrote an insightful book on the plague as well.
We will get it together, soon we will be able to figure out who had it and has antibodies, antivirals will be made, a vaccine will probably be a year or more but we are likely to get one. Eventually we will get herd immunity.
This isn't the end of the world but it will be measured in months not weeks, it's more of a winter than a snowstorm.
If you think this may be helpful to someone you know feel free to share it.
