Unlikely he would be alert yet... maybe if it was ass crack of dawn like 6am surgery but usually it is several hours after surgery before you really "come to" and then another couple hours where you are so heavily sedated that you go in and out.

What kind of fourth world hospital still goes in through the back for fusion surgeries..??

It's due to happen after the front of the neck has too much scarring from past surgeries. Scary AF whenever neck or back needs ANY surgery, even worse when complications arise from previously repaired discs.

A great thing is Pf has a surgeon willing to step in. Have read horror stories about patients with visible XRay issues that doctors aren't willing to do surgery on because of the risk of paralyzing the patient. Before surgery YOU are made to sign a waiver to not hold them accountable if a worst case scenario happens.
