I love Volk but he didn’t win that fight. It was a bad look for Islam, especially near the end, but he did win based on the scoring criteria.

I had Islam winning it but Volk taking the final round the way he did has me thinking Islam isn't guaranteed to win the rematch if it does happen. All in all, a great fight between two amazing fighters.

To me, Islam won "the MMA fight" ... we agree here ... but (IMO) Volk won THE BATTLE ...

Pound-for-pound, I agree Volk is the better fighter.
(In other words, had the sizes been reversed, for sure Volk would have won.)

That said, within the actual 5-round timeframe, Makhachev "beat" Volkanovski ...

PS: I also believe that Volk's resurgence, at the end of the last round, made me believe Volkanovski would have beat Makhachev in a fight with no time-limit.

PSS: I understand what you're saying, I think Volkanovski is the better man, all nuances considered.

I had it 3-2 Islam, can't see how Volk won. But it was a close fight and great effort by Volk.

Islam lost more stock although the judges gave it to him though.
Volk lost his first UFC fight, which I also don’t think is really true.

Islam calling out a featherweight instead of a Welterweight right after winning the title due to having a huge size advantage thinking he’d just roll through Volk ended up looking very bad though, Volk is basically now the Interim Lightweight and Featherweight champ because of that fight.

Islam was equaled in every part of the fight he supposedly was better in, and then got out worked on the feet while being unable to mount any real offensive subs or gnp

Volk meanwhile barely has a scratch and ends up in the most dominant position of the whole fight after one of the trickiest trips I’ve ever seen in the UFC.

It was a great fight, and I do recall a straight left Islam had caught Volk with that rocked him, as well as a beautiful takedown entrance that was absolutely perfect in execution, double leg but the way Islam wrapped himself on Volk’s leg was lighting fast.

Pretty sure it was already stated going in that Volk would be fighting Islam/Charles, so it's not like Islam called out a featherweight. He just called out his already decided next challenger.

Volk is basically now the Interim Lightweight and Featherweight champ because of that fight.

Volk got laid on that 4th round which cost him the fight. Truth is Volk outperformed expectations which he should be credited for, but Islam still won 3 rounds under the rules in place. Islam definitely lost a lot of his aura he had going into that fight and by far looked more worn down by the end of the fight. Could see Volk adjusting and winning a rematch.
