What made you think the United States would not become this? The same America that went to war because they wanted to preserve slavery. The same America that has interfered with countries to preserve American influence. The hatred for immigrants did not just start in the past few years. It was happening in the 90's and 00's. I mean the Goobacks episode of South Park came out 21 years ago where the whole thing was "They took our jobs". America always has to be at war.

If America actually fixed even a third of the problems that have existed for decades I would argue the Dem Party as we know it now would not exist and the majority of Republicans would be laughed out of the room.

Maybe I didn't think it would happen so rapidly and with so much apathy, or cavalier attitude, from a large portion of the population. I don't know how Americans can just accept the government just openly sending people to foreign camps and using legal interpretations and a logic that allows them to send anyone, including citizens away. Add that with the President caught on a hot mic telling the El Salvador President they are going to do the same with "homegrowns" and to build at least 5 more of those absolutely horrendous prisons in preparation, I just think there is a tacit acceptance by Americans who refuse to see this for what it is, and it's mind boggling to me the country I grew up knowing it had the strictest application of freedoms is now rapidly descending into authoritarianism.

I want to choose my words carefully as I can here but America has always been a country of Capitalism first and "white" people second. If you read some books especially tied to any struggles with black history in America there is a common theme other than oppression and black people selling out their own during the struggle. That common theme is the need to appeal to whites, liberals and conservatives in order to get true, significant change.

Corruption can occur at the highest level but until it affects those at the very top (Capitalism) or the majority of citizens you are trying to please (mostly whites but there are minority conservatives) stuff like you mentioned can happen easily. I mean we are talking about the same America that made internment camps for Japanese citizens in the 1940's some of whom were U.S. citizens. The same America that made the 3 Strikes Rule which overly targeted minorities.

I'm not in disagreement with you. But there have been important human and civil rights victories in the past 60 years that are suddenly evaporating. I just felt there would be stronger pushback for the overt attack on individual rights and freedomns happening. America talked a big game about individual rights and freedoms, including on this very site from supposed Republican voters who loved to claim "I might not agree with you but I'll fight tooth and nail to preserve your right to voice your opinion". Now that people are being jailed and sent to prison for things they say, these same free speech absolutists are creating all the kinds of excuses.

Maybe it is all about money in the end. Trump got elected on a bunch of phony promises to the economy even though he's doing what he said he would do, but sold the vision of a different outcome most experts on the matter tried to warn everyone against. I can't explain what is going on in America in a succinct matter. There's just a ton of apathy, arrogance and ignorance on display.

I get what you're saying and as someone not living in the United States I can see your perspective but America, throughout history, has not played on the world stage without loaded dice. What you see is not always what is. I mean look at Mohammad Mosaddegh and the CIA's hands in Iran. America did Hawaii dirty with Queen Lili'uokalani and Patrice Lumumba in Congo.

There are plenty people smarter than me but in the end I think it's about maintaining Capitalism and "Neoliberalism" on a world stage. America, in my opinion, has never wanted a repeat of Roosevelt and why Henry Wallace was screwed over by the Dems and replaced by Truman instead.

Yes, this was one case of what you're talking about. A person doing this for "Chinese tourists"...and she got busted. There is no indication of how successful this one person was. And you represented it like its some kind of nationwide phenomenon. Because that's what reactionaries do.

About 1% (what they know any way) of Chinese tourists are birth tourism.
Which is 1% too much. Not as bad as the "anchor babies " we see generally which is a whole other problem that needs fixing.
 
If chinese birth tourism is really a thing, what are the downsides of it for the US? I could understand the backlash if you guys had public healthcare and taxpayers would be funding chinese births, but as it is I can't see what is the big deal. Honest question here.

I haven't really given it much thought. We aren't talking about poor Chinese people, so I would guess it would be a net positive for the U.S.
