This is where we gotta part ways. Do you honestly think enormously complicated racial history of this country didn't impact the opportunities available to people? You talk about "privilege" like it doesn't exist, yet I've literally experienced getting a job over someone equally qualified simply because I was white and, according to who hired me, "I've found them harder to deal with".

So if you're gonna pretend it's a made up issue I'm gonna disagree with you completely. The answer definitely isn't running 100 miles in the other direction, but to suggest there's a perfect racial balance of opportunity in this country is bullshit.

Now it is easily dismissed. What isn't so easily dismissed? That people who aren't journalists are expected to vet journalism? No. That those who didn't check would get such a basic question of ethical civics wrong...now that is concerning.

This is accompanied by a resistance to information that would contradict that same narrative. Check out the thread where Goonerview refuses to accept that hundreds of thousands of muslims served for Britain in the great wars for an example of this. I think it's actually a fairly big problem. You can't have a dialogue on this basis. Even if you find Fawlty's reaction reprehensible, he strikes me as someone with whom dialogue on the issue is possible.

I'm not sure what I'm asking for here. I don't think it's reasonable for everyone to fact check everything they encounter. But I don't see why people are so passionate about things that they haven't fact checked. Why must we dive right in? I fucking hate when I catch myself doing it.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a lot of people in here calling for the death of whitey or saying "no whites allowed" is good in any way. I'm seeing a push-back against the notion that any drive for equality, or attempt to close the racial gap in this country, is inherently racist.

It's not, but a generation of white kids who watched kids of color be told to celebrate their heritage, while we struggled to find culture in our own, are feeling left out and want attention.

Sadly they've gone about it in the worst ways imaginable, and the result has been things like Donald Trump becoming president.

You're after the dynamics of conformist thought. On the one hand, with several different press outlets carrying it, whose job it is to vet stories, and on the other, that the first wave of posters who came in accepted this as sufficient in addition to finding it credible (which it is, entirely, rooted in massive recent precedent such as the very explicit example of Evergreen that I already cited).

Yet it didn't even last two days, in here, and it clearly wasn't intended to be sustained (as when the meeting must not have taken place). Rather, it appears to me that it was intended to illustrate a point by forcing a dialogue where people exposed their willingness to support it if presuming these things.

Quite an effective "troll", I'd say. Master-level stuff.

I didn't reply on the first page 'mick, I replied a page ago, and my reply wasn't justifying it at all. It was criticizing the continued practice of blaming 50% of the country for things done by individuals and tiny groups. Nothing in my criticisms even hinged on this being true or not, because I was criticizing the reaction to it.
