Feel like more people are now acknowledging this to be a fun 80s horror film. To me, much of the backlash was cause it was a Halloween film without Myers. The fact that it is now the ONLY Halloween film with that distinction makes it historically interesting in and of itself. But it's damn entertaining in my opinion and one I like to revisit around this time of year. The Silver Shamrock jingle that gets obnoxiously stuck in your head, Atkins doing badass Atkins shit, entertaining plot, Dan Herlihy chewing the scenery as the villain, and a particularly nefarious villain scheme, complete with a bleak ending.
Certainly was well-received but feel like it deserved a bigger audience. Soderbergh in full on Hitchcock mode with Law giving a very likable and relatable performance as a Hitch-like protagonist- caught up in a situation careening out of control and slowly costing him all the things he values. Very entertaining and well-made.
Classic Marty film that is rarely talked about in his canon. Manages to capture many of his sensibilities while also being distinct from some of his better known films. Dunne's nightmarish odyssey through late-night NYC is like a time capsule to a sketchier time in the city's history but also really combines different tonal elements well- dark comedy, suspense, borderline horror.
