Underrated/Overrated Films

I hope you're not saying the movie was great. Because that was an absolute travesty to the source material. Completely miscasting all the actors (Fire Nation = Japanese, Earth Kingdom = Chinese, Water Tribe = Inuit, Air Nomads = Buddhist Monks). Instead we get Fire Nation that looks Indian and Water Tribe that looks Caucasian.

Remember in the cartoon when they imprisoned the Earth benders offshore on a prison made of wood? In the movie they just had a prison on land...surrounded by tons of earth and yet these guys didn't try to bust out until Aang and the gang showed up. They mispronounced Sokka and Aang's names (it's not an anime translated from Japanese, dummies!) and most importantly of all, the movie was lacking the humor and character development that made you fall in love with the characters. It was hollow, empty.
 
Overrated: LOTR I, II, and III

Underrated: BTTF I, II, and III

Both are fantastic films.

Back To The Future is not underrated whatsoever. An argument could be made for it's sequels though. Especially Part 2.

Overrated:

Avatar - Seriously, James Cameron must be a mentalist. How he made people make this utterly forgettable, average flick the #1 money making movie of all time, is truly the work of a warlock.

Underrated:

Rambo - The newest one. Now this is a fucking action movie. True to it's roots, and a nice bookend for the series.
 
lol I just watched Universal Soldier regeneration again... and am again impressed at how great it is.

Realistic, if still somewhat stupid, fight scenes (I'll just throw my gun away), a hero with a real predicament that carries great gravity, and just... thoughtfulness.

When Dolph Lundgren asks "Do you sometimes contemplate the complexity of life?" I legit lose my shit for a second because that moment alone is such great filmmaking.

Since I already cited Tombstone as overrated in this thread, I will say that Universal Soldier Regeneration is not only underrated, it's... better than Tombstone.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration is a weird one. JCVD and Dolph are historically poor actors...but they stole the show in this movie...with their acting. It was bizarre. They were putting the rest of the cast to absolute shame. Granted, the rest of the cast gave some horrible performances, but there were some "legit" actors in there that were made to look like fools by the acting chops of Frank Dux and the Red Scorpion.

Absolutely. He played the same Rambo character that he played in First Blood. In the middle two (especially III), he kind of combined Rambo with Rocky and his other everyman protagonists.

You need to watch JCVD. It had Oscar buzz and for good reason: Van Damme was acting in that. Like, REAL acting. With real range and intensity. I can honestly say his performance was better than anything I've ever seen Leonardo DiCaprio do.

I've seen it and had the same reaction. I couldn't believe I was watching Van Damme.

That said, when saying it was better than anything DiCaprio has ever done...

Agree with both.

I watched Rambo with the girl I was dating at the time and my best friend and it was such a strange experience because the girl was going to live in Burma for 18 months to do NGO charity work, pretty much exactly like the characters in the film, and we were all worried about her getting hurt over there. So the movie struck a deep emotion from us right from the beginning.

And something weird must have been happening in the audience, because the weird energy and deeper connection to the movie we were feeling was felt by everyone in the audience, kind of like how waves of emotions can sweep through the crowd at a sports event. I have never once in my life seen an entire audience stand up and cheer / applaud the hero saving the day at the climax of the movie... but the entire theatre did it at the end of Rambo. And most of them had tears in their eyes.

It was fucking surreal. As I type this I realize how silly it all sounds.

That movie would have been perfect if they had recast Julie Benz or she had delivered a better performance.

I like Meet Joe Black a lot. Good choice.

I'm not sure how Boondock Saints can be underrated. It's a beloved cult classic. I like it, btw.
