Oh well, Song Yadong is a tune up for Umar anyways. Petr Yan had a lot of success wrestling him & I think Umar can do the same. Expect Umar to be a minimum -450 betting favorite imo.

Yeah it's almost like you need to earn and defend your spot rather than just be handed a contender fight.

This is good. umar should have to defend this spot. He was given a massive gift from sandhagen taking that fight. Sandhagen did not have to oblige that, They could have had him force through the rankings the right way, fighting people of a similar rank. his fight before sandhagen was a debutant. and we all know that Sandhagen is weak to grappling specialists. No proof he'd have actually been able to work through the rankings and get to the top. This helps his claim he was given the opportunity to fight the top ranking, Now he should defend that ranking position just once.

He told Umar yeah I can only fight in March a time most Muslims will not be fighting because of Ramadan. We knew he wasn’t gonna fight Umar this year, but I just guess it’s the new normal to not fight the number 1 contender

Umar should have just waited. Even Dana said he was next

But the Song fight is smart. Easy work for Umar and it will get more people talking about Merab being a duck.

It was never targeted for UFC Tampa, that was just another garbage source claiming that fight was anywhere close to happening, total nonsense.

Why the hell should the champ have to accommodate the no.1 contender who only has 1 top 15 win?

Umar can decide between a title shot or his religious thing. If he doesn't want it, let someone else have it and he can get it after. It's not like Merab is only gonna fight during those set dates going forward lol.

Not about "accomodating" Umar, why is Merab not wanting to fight until March or later? He's obviously artificially delaying his return for the benefit of holding onto the belt longer.

You mean low risk high reward, much like Umar Vs sandhagen.

It's only right that Umar must now take a risk too, if sandhagen were to beat Umar his reward would be a title shot. Now that shoe is on Umars foot.

Yadong isn't much of a risk more than any other ranked bantamweight for Umar, Yadong is going to get 50-44'd or submitted. Just a way for Umar to keep active is all.

How is Merab delaying his return when he barely fights that regularly anyway? The Suga fight was the only time he's had more than 1 fight per year since 2021.

Now he's ducking because he's not fighting Umar within 5 months? What lol?

There's also other things involved as well like no usually no big events in December and the UFC's own plans for promotion. I wouldn't just assume this is all some ploy by Merab. It's not like the UFC would prefer him as champ over Umar. They already pushed Umar right to the top of the division by giving him a fight against Corey that he had in no way earned. If they wanted to keep pushing that there's nothing Merab could do about it.
