Umar did better than all of prime Merab's top opponents with one hand

Merab is almost 35. It's close to inevitable Dagestan stops him when Umar enters his prime and is healthy.

Umar is a beast. I wish he did more front kicks to the body. He will be champ eventually but he's got that 1 loss now. He'll never get it back.

True, but Islam has a loss and is currently the best in the UFC.

I'm pretty convinced Umar or his brother Usman will reach p4p #1 at some point. Both in the Top 10 p4p.

Merab's cardio is just the best ever right now so this situation is an anomaly. We've never seen anything like his tank so Team Khabib took a very rare L.

One hand? Had he gotten KO’d ”he was not even concious in the fight”, surely.

Umar did have one hand though, and he only needed to win one more round on the scorecards to win.

Pesonally I thought he won the first 3 rounds but it is a bad look to get handled in the last two rounds.

I don't get how he won 3. That fight was a crystal clear 48-47 for Merab.

I agree Umar did well though.

Can Umar deal with Shaydullaev when he comes over though?

Def toughest test so far.

I thought he won 3 with cleaner strikes.

There was a strong commentator bias that started in the third, not because I think Joe is pro Merab but all they started talking about was Merab's cardio because that was when the tide started turning. Very close round though Merab had the slight edge in wrestling and Umar in striking.

Umar had two hands he was throwing until the end.

He did good yes but he still got spanked.

Merab tossed him around until Umar gassed. It looked like Umar just wanted the fight to be over.

Even though I gave Umar 1, 2 and 3 I would have probably also judged it for Merab because if you're going to take a belt off the champ, you can't fold at the end of the fight.

I watched the fight twice, second time I could see Umar was gassing and Merab was having his way with him after the second round.

Umar is a very good fighter but to me it was clear as day Merab won the fight he pushed the pace and was always trying to win the fight.

The better fighter won on the night.

There was no way that was going to Umar he didn’t win the fight.

I agree with the OP. With the right adjustments and actual absence of injuries, Umar should win the future rematch decisively.

Merab had a short 6 week camp with an injured back. He also had that hole in his shin. Camp wasn't easy for him during the holidays. Training partners and gyms aren't available around that time.

I scored it a comfortable 3-2 Merab.

Not to mention that Merab was reportedly compromised too going into the fight.

Umar is elite but Merab is the best in the world currently.

Merab also outstruck Umar in kicks too and that was with an injured leg.
