UFC releases Yushin Okami

There are a whole bunch of other guys that could be cut to compensate for money issues if that's the case.

My Jaw just dropped right now. An absolutely ridiculous move. The worst cut ever- no justification at all for this cut. The UFC should just rename itself the Ultimate Entertainment Championship. This is a bullshit move. Plain and simple. You keep guys like Garcia, Akiyama and Hardy around, but cut a top ten fighter like Okami, who had won three fights in a row against tough opponents and one loss to Jacare means a cut (SMH). Clearly it is no more about getting victories.

Absolutely ridiculous move. F*** Dana and the UFC, because Okami did not deserve this. Criticize me all you want- but no Sherdogger can justify this move to me. Rankings mean shit, your record means shit- i guess it is all about entertainment. As a MMA fan, i actually liked Okami fight. This isn't Boxing- the sport is MMA. All you crazy idiots applauding this move should make the switch to Boxing or better yet Pro Wrestling. I liked Okami and this was a terrible decision.

You went over the top there. The best fighter in each division holds the belt, so it's not like a massive popularity contest decides the important stuff. Popularity can make the difference between being cut or kept when you're on the edge, but that hardly affects the entire sport.

3-1 in his last 4....REALLY??

On ability offcourse no one can justify this.....he's better than majority of middleweights. Just as Fitch was better than majority.......but this isnt team sport where your ability is the only thing that matters. But what I dont understand is are tuf fighters actually more popular than someone like Okami?

Ou roster is packed. Then Phan gets a fight vs a guy that won 3 in a row. Lol

But you could argue from business point of view he doesnt bring in the money which is the most important thing. UFC is a business first and foremost

i obviously don't know any of the figures or anything, but okami is quite prominent in japanese media and probably one of the most heavily featured japanese mma fighters. he's constantly on the covers of mma magazines, in mma and non-mma articles, in commercials, and front and center at a lot of UFC promotional events in japan. the UFC gets a lot of free advertisement from all of that, so i'm not sure i believe that it's a shrewd business move.

the ufc obviously knows better than me though, and they have access to figures and data that i don't have about how important okami is to them in this respect.

Dana has responded on Twitter, his reason for cutting Okami was "our roster is packed"

Hell no.

With all the lame TUFs and every cast-off getting signed, its no surprise things boil down to this. Shitty situation. Turns out its just business...

Went ahead and added a poll.

Terrible decision by Zuffa. Okami might not be the most exciting guy, but he's a quality fighter who deserves to fight in the UFC.

Wtf? What a terrible release. I'm sure they weren't paying Okami tons of dough either... sigh.

What the fuck, what a shitty release. He's the only decent japanese fighter they had.

Okami may be Japanese but the Japanese fans do not care much about him (mostly because of his style of fighting I would imagine), so that doesn't work in his favor much.

I take this cut to be along the same lines as cutting Fitch and Volkmann. Okami is still a top 5-6 MW in my mind, but he doesn't really provide any real value to the UFC. In fact Okami may even do more harm than good because he makes some potential stars for the UFC look bad, like Hector Lombard.

I'm not in favor of cutting Okami as a fan of the sport, but it I think it certainly makes sense from a business standpoint.

Man, i've been away from Sherdog for a day and this happens?

This sport is turning into a fucking joke. I'm not even mad tbh, this is just a part of a longer trend which had gained in strength since the Strikeforce merger. Amir Sadollah gets to headline cards while Okami and Fitch get cut, enough said.

Not a huge fan but that cut is indefensible according to MMAfighting Dana said the reason is that the roster was too big

Okami a top 5 middleweight and 3-1 in his last 4 is not important enough for Uriah Hall and Chris Leben i guess...

don't agree with the cut at all.

bad move UFC.

We don't know what other factors might be going into this. Everyone thought cutting fitch was a mistake, but after seeing what happened in his last fight it doesn't seem to be. It's not like Okami was ever going to challenge for a title again anyways

Wow, brutal cut. I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually liked watching him fight.
