UFC releases Yushin Okami

He’s gotta be up there with the GOAT weight cutters/gainers of all time.

I still remember when he fought Mike Swick and Mike saying in his corner after round 1 "He is sooooooo strong ugghhhhh"

Lol

Just rewatched him vs Anderoid.

Really glass-like chin on Okami in that fight.

Looked absolutely overwhelmed by the hostile crowd and the aura of the champion
He was done after Silva landed a head kick at the end of first round, with almost the first strike he threw. I'd not say it was a matter of chin, Okami was just totally outclassed

Okami is 39. Maybe he can go somewhere else to make money and get a belt. Respek.

Eh, he's basically the same generation as Fitch and Shields. Those guys were released years ago and were never brought back like Okami. I like Yushin, but all he's going to do a this stage of his career is rack up a bunch of losses and tarnish his reputation.

He is a below average sized MW by today's standards

Lol no, I agree with the above poster, he was once a big middleweight, but not so much anymore..... he put muscled guys like Jason Mac Donald who were big and strong middleweights.... just because he fought at welterweight doesn’t make him small.

NO! NOT OKAMI! NOT IN 2020
UFC is dead to me now

He didn't outmuscle McDonald, boxed him up until Jason pulled guard.

Anyways Okami was strong but not really big for the division, let alone by today standards. It's not even a matter of opinion. Its reported by Sonnen himself that Okami used to walk around at 200lbs when training in Team Quest. That's not a big MW, period.

He has a wide frame but also lanky waist and legs. Okami definitely wasnt the heavier man in the cage vs McDonald, Muñoz, Boetsch, Sonnen, Branch or Franklin, guys who cut 20+ lbs to make 185; let alone Rockhold or Costa.

I have no idea of the context as I'm not reading a 46 page thread, but the fact he managed to make 170 shows he wasn't a big MW.

A big MW could kill himself at some point at early age like Rumble Johnson did to make 170...but he can't maintain that. Ask Rumble, still in his mid 30s, to make 170

In Okami we talk about a guy who fought at WW almost half of his career, at his 20s and at his late 30s, never had problems making the limit, and even did for small paydays in Deep or Pancrase not long ago.

Besides, just watching at his fights, I dont understand how can you see him sharing the cage with thiiiick, thick dudes like Boetsch, Muñoz, Franklin or Branch and say that Okami is a big MW
