UFC releases Yushin Okami

Can't belive that 50 people voted yes.

Worse than the Fitch cut IMO.

Looking at it objectively howeverhe is no longer a ccontender, seems to have hit a wall and is a 'contender killer'.

Sad, but probs a solid business decision except of course the Japan market side.

that is insane

yushin is a perennial top 10 guy and dangerous at that

how many times do u get an asian with that kind of size

I can think of three possible reasons very quickly:

1. It sets a troubling precedent.
2. The premise of the organization is to house the elite fighters, of which he is one.
3. Some people enjoy watching him fight, and their opinion is as valid as yours.

4. He costs less than 1/3 of Lombard's pay, who he recently beat
5. Been a loyal company man for his entire stay
6. Will fight anybody (read: no 'teammates' excuse, now or ever)

Okami is not a big draw and fights a style that's construed to be boring to the casual eye.

But the main problem is that he's a big time gatekeeper. He's still so good that he prevents would-be contenders from moving up - and usually does so in a grind it out fashion. The UFC doesn't like boring fighters, especially those who can inhibit title routes for more promising, exciting fighters.

Well he does have some good grappling but gets KO'd by guys with better striking. Not a horrible release considering he hasn't finished a fight since 1978 but I do realize there are a lot of people that should have got the axe before Okami.

I have no reason to dislike Okami, but I think it really is how Dana put it. He didn't turn the corner, and he wasn't a threat to any of the top ranked guys. The UFC is in a different place now, and it has less room for gatekeepers, which was basically what Okami had become.

If you're not champion material, you need to at least build a name. Plenty of guys have thrived in the UFC by having a good name. Okami really wasn't known for anything.

I wonder how many Twitter battles DW has gotten in today over this decision.

He got KO'd by Marquardt, Lombard, Belcher, Chael, Franklin and Swick?
Do you even UFC bro?

A solid fighter who will go on to collect some belts of lesser prestige.

He had a finish last year. He doesn't get a lot of finishes, but there are many guys with less finishes on the roster.

Over 800 posts already! If we had given Okami this much attention the whole time, he'd still be in the UFC. It's hypocritical to scoff at the idea of ever buying a PPV with Okami headlining, then complain when he gets cut.
