UFC losing its appeal?

Heavyweight and LHW for sure are sucking and the whole DWCS has brought in more bullshit instead of the best fighters.
A contender series guy is the Champ now. The UFC does have way too many fighters though, 700 is ridiculous.

Pouting and Crying is never a good look.

Too bad it's the one most donned...

I'm watching UFC 283 here and looking at the card thinking "what is this absolute garbage" it's a fight night card!!

I remember back in the day the UFCs being stacked head to toe of unbelievable fights, that's what brought them to the dance, that's why it became so popular. It was slowly catching Boxing up as the no1 combat sport.

They had 20 of the elite fighters in each division, the best vs the best, lose 3 and you're cut from the organisation. How could you not love that?

Now we have 88 active fighters in BW alone.. 80 in LW, MW. This is why years are going by and we're not seeing the best vs the best.

Whoever booked Andrade vs Murphy needs sacking. The most mismatched fight I've ever seen.
Back in the day.. My fav time ever.

In the early 70s, my mom would send me to the corner store with $1 to buy her a pack of cigarettes. They were $.90. Which meant that I could buy 20 Mojos (a taffy kind of candy). As they were 2 for a penny. Last time I saw them in a store they were 5 cents each.

Life has never been better than ..

Back in the day.

Things change, man.

They've added a bunch of fighters but the majority aren't good. It was more exciting to have a card every couple weeks but the majority of PPV's seemed stacked. Now we get a card every week but only a few a year that are truly stacked (280,281 last year)

Nobody outside hardcores knows anything about the other promotions. It's just pointless for them.

I've only been into MMA for about 3 years now. Now before that I ordered the Connor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather PPV back in 2017 but I'd never had watched any of McGregor's MMA fights. What made me interested is UFC was the first sport to reopen during the pandemic so I think I gave Fight Island a shot and the first fight I remember was Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje. Ferguson was at the peak of his popularity so I wanted to see the hype.

Then however since I had DAZN and they had Bellator with at lot of their classic fights I started watching Michael Chandler's old fights and Ben Askren and Jorge Masvidal. Around the same time ESPN+ was also running the full 1-10 UFC series then I started learning about the Pioneers like Shamrock, Gracie, Coleman, Severn, Abbott about what they brought to the sport.

I never heard of Fedor before I joined this site and of course I wasn't around in the Pride days as a fan. I'm really excited about the chance of watching Fedor live before he retires and I hope its a great fight. I'm at the point though with the UFC where I skip over the fight nights and will only order a super fight PPV. I ordered Izzy-Poatan because of the kickboxing rivalry and I would order Volk-Islam superfight as well as Jones-Gane. But some of this other stuff the UFC is serving on a regular basis for $85 I'm just going to skip. I'd rather watch a good Bellator card for free on Showtime and I have the Paramount+/Showitme package just for Bellator.

What does it then for the casual I'm asking? Nate Diaz PPV? A Poirier fight? I have not and would never order a McGregor UFC PPV. I was even rooting for him to lose against Mayweather in boxing. I'm looking for elite fights not hype and personality.

The Hel?

UFC 283 was fucking fire.

This coming from a huge Shogun fan.

I'm not sure if ranking a full Top 15 makes any sense either when guys 11-15 will never get title shot even if there is a double COVID situation. I think there is also a big difference from a guy that has a Top 10 win and one that doesn't. The amount of guys at any given time that are legit title contenders is around 5 or so and it might be a guy that is 8 or 9 on his way up instead of a guy ranked #3 or #4. That is why just fighting within the UFC leads to a lot of recycling.

In boxing the 4 belt system and having automatic rematch clauses in the contracts do lead a second fight once in a while but you don't see a second fight and then two years later cycle around for a 3rd like you get in UFC. Rank squatters are rewarded with low risk fights against other highly ranked squatters. Boxing for a contender to get in the mix they normally have to win a mandatory eliminator at that belt (WBC, WBO, WBA, IBF) to be able to get into the title shot shuffle. Sometimes they'll have stay busy fights though when I champ will fight a guy outside the Top 10 and they have a 98% probability of winning.

In boxing a former champ usually drops straight to gatekeeper where in UFC a guy like Whittaker gets recycled for another shot because of nobody else to compete against at 185. The rankings tend to pin a lot of guys down in the UFC from getting their chance like Belal and Dariush since for a long time they couldn't break into the rank squatter club. Boxing the ranking is less important for a contender as the record and fighters will get a mandatory or title shot as an available 20-0 fighter. Once in a while a star is born with a big upset.

You could even say the quality of the product has gone down Jamahall Hill.

Lmao

The UFC is constantly dropping the ball on super fights, and making shit like Izzy vs Jan which drops their stock. Not to mention they want 80$ for PPV, for that much I can get weed beer pizza and stream UFC for free Lmao.

That's a good point. Rank Squatting is a big problem and the rankings don't necessarily reflect who is going up vs coming down. I'm just glad we got Gaethje to fight someone different lol

UFC treating its fans like drug addicts confirmed.

Got them hooked on the good stuff, now just giving them bottom of the bag shake.

<{danayeah}>
I was hooked on the good shit a decade ago, but the bammer stopped getting me high altogether. And here I was hoping to relapse, ain't doing it...

New fighter nickname: Jamahal “The UFC Is Going Down” Hill.

I can’t relate. Last nights event was fantastic. I stopped caring about rankings and start power years ago. I only care about whether or not a fight is entertaining and I got plenty of entertainment last night.

My guess is that a lot of y’all guys care about things like star power and charisma. If that’s the case, I can understand why you might be losing interest. But as far as fights go, we’ve been consistently been great fights compared to 10 years ago. Even on the prelims.

actually, no, I think I can relate by comparing my interest to other sports. I used to watch football and basketball from time to time. But I grew up with legends like Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Larry bird, Steve young, Barry sanders, magic Johnson. Once they retired, I lost interest and haven’t kept up with the sport since. So I can understand people losing interest in mma after losing all the legends.

I’m just a fight sports nerd so I’m going to watch and enjoy regardless.
