UFC losing its appeal?

No you're just older and stuck in the "back in my day" zone.

Most of the practical and pragmatic crowd understand that the product/quality of product is better now, especially for such a new sport like MMA.

The reality is, our preferences and priorities change with time. As you get older you stop being so closely aligned to a fighter/team due to outside responsibilities in life, and your interest can waiver at times. Then comes the - "it was way better before" because you enjoyed it more. It is natural.

True, but also false. Of course priorities change and if you have been a fan for ~20 years, you are not the same person today, and as you get older you generally don’t have as much spare time to binge watch MMA.

Having said that, if you don’t think the quality as in exciting matchups and well marketed characters has gone down, you are incorrect. The overall level of skill has gone up as more train MMA, but the roster is bloated with DWCS type of fighters that will never make a name of themselves. When the roster grows, it becomes more difficult for fighters to stand out when there are so many cards and so many fighters.

So while it’s definitely true that “in my days” type of narrative is in play, the product itself has objectively become less exciting as the UFC creates fewer stars or “name” fighters but instead focus on quantity.

Absolutely. The quality of the product has also gone downhill.

They no longer even openly try to put the best product out… they just sign regional level guys to not only fill prelims anymore but main cards now.

But as long as fans keep hyping up low caliber fighters the product will still continue.

It's been chaotic at times but I fucking love it still.

Hence my presence on here.

And I guess that goes for most people as well.

I'm watching UFC 283 here and looking at the card thinking "what is this absolute garbage" it's a fight night card!!

I remember back in the day the UFCs being stacked head to toe of unbelievable fights, that's what brought them to the dance, that's why it became so popular. It was slowly catching Boxing up as the no1 combat sport.

They had 20 of the elite fighters in each division, the best vs the best, lose 3 and you're cut from the organisation. How could you not love that?

Now we have 88 active fighters in BW alone.. 80 in LW, MW. This is why years are going by and we're not seeing the best vs the best.

Whoever booked Andrade vs Murphy needs sacking. The most mismatched fight I've ever seen.

We're just getting old, and jaded bro.

The fact jamahall hill is a champion in the same division that Jones, Liddell, rampage and shogun were says all you need to know about the UFCs state
Hill doesn't even crack top 10 ten years ago
I would bet bellators top 5 all have a reasonable shot at beating the UFCs lhw champion
When has that ever been the case for any division?

Quantity over quality route, saturating the market with the same thing rinsed and recycled. Add to that the castrated, corporate presentation from the commentary to the promotional stuff. For me there's no energy around UFC anymore, its all become so robotic and the majority of fighters are just generic cogs in the machine.

UFC have somehow managed to develop a winning formula that sucks the life out of fighting and make it as boring as possible.

The UFC needs to trim most of the roster

Too many no name cans on the roster who cost the UFC money instead of make money for the UFC

Should be around 15-20 fighters per division only

UFC actually needs to be the best of the best again not just full of no name cans whose skill level are equivalent to bums fighting on the street

All true... except...the UFC is really truly actually losing its appeal. But thanks for the response there, Dana Boy!

Are you done? Good. Now take your meds & go to bed.

Opposite for me actually. The last couple of years I could feel my enjoyment of watching an event gradually decline. But for some reason I really enjoyed this event. Got up nice and early, made some breakfast and coffee, watched everything from early prelims to the main event, and generally had a great time.

I think the long break from events did wonders for my passion for MMA.
