On its face I'm fine with no other countries owning any of our land but I don't know enough about countries' policy like this to know what's normal/benign and not so I don't have a strong opinion. Noteworthy from the article, that I'm not sure how many posting here actually read, however, is this:
The 25-page criminal complaint does not allege that the defendants – who investigators say were in a relationship – had any plans to spread the fungus beyond the laboratory. But it says Liu was aware of the restrictions on the material and deliberately hid it in a wad of tissues in his backpack.
“This type of smuggling is actually rare,” Dr. Donell Harvin, former chief of homeland security for the District of Columbia, told CNN. “Most of the time we see these cases, it’s a researcher exfiltrating or trying to remove information or materials outside the US from their research.” Still, Harvin warned that a pathogen like Fusarium is extremely dangerous. “It doesn’t matter whether the person had good intentions,” he said. “If there’s some type of mistake, or mishap, or release, that could have catastrophic consequences.”
It sounds like smuggling stuff to study isn't unprecedented and thus not necessarily a nefarious plot though obviously, shit like this needs to be stopped as it's very dangerous, regardless.
There's also a shit load of military bases in the US so again, while it sounds sketchy that they've bought farmland near US bases I question what that actually means and though I definitely think the government should keep an eye on it and have a comprehensive approval process if its going to allow this, I'm not jumping to conclusions, though China does play the long game because they are actually forward thinking.
I do, however, disagree with revoking student visas. This is a source of income for the US and I believe xenophobes fail to realize that people wanting to come here as either immigrants or students is a good thing, that means we have something to offer, not to mention they contribute here culturally and economically contrary to what the opposition says. This is a good thing. Isolationism will only weaken us. The world is connected and we benefit from those connections and contributions.
'It sounds good, but I can't give Trump credit for anything.'
