U.K. Labour Lawmaker Jo Cox Dead After Shooting

U.K. Labour Party lawmaker Jo Cox is in a critical condition in the hospital Thursday after being attacked while meeting constituents in her electoral district in West Yorkshire in the north of England.

Campaigning was suspended in Britain’s European Union membership referendum after news of the attack, which happened just before 1 p.m., came out.

The Press Association reported Cox was shot twice. Eyewitnesses speaking to the BBC described him having a home-made gun.

West Yorkshire Police said they had arrested a 52-year-old man in the area. Without naming Cox, they said that “a woman in her 40s had suffered serious injuries and is in a critical condition."

The BBC reported witnesses say the man was shouting Britain First.
