nah I enjoy dialogue. I'll clip it into paragraphs though because god damn
You didn't need to say all this because your point was already understood and addressed. For similar reasons that "white trash" and the N word are not by any means an equivalent derogatory term, a White Entertainment Television in a predominantly white country that was built on slavery would continue the oppressive nature of its past that it's tried to move away from with various civil rights acts and progressive movements. "White trash" has no oppressive caricatures like the N word, when used by white people does. You've been trying to draw that equivalency for a while but it isn't there. As an aside, I am also white and I understand full and well who the demographic of "white trash" describes, and the reason I have no problem using it is because the demographic it describes are the ones that have no problem continuing oppressive behaviors towards people of color. If that doesn't describe someone, they probably don't fall under "White trash."
What you seem to choose to ignore is the many facets where white people are systemically propped up, and things like BET serve to create more equal grounds. What's interesting, though, is that you say things like "I understand this this and that about stereotypes and racism and head patting not helping" but I don't know how you could. Just because you say you do and have yourself convinced of your own argument doesn't mean you do. In fact, I'd go one further to say it's impossible for you to know what people of color need to help them especially if you're as dismissive of their opinions as you have been Tyron Woodley's.
I didn't just call you a conservative. I called you a threatened and sensitive one. Important distinction there. I have no problem voting conservative if I see fit and don't think all conservatives are shitty. I was dialing in on the shitty ones.
Agreed, though I'm stricter gun rights and pro gay marriage because who the fuck cares when they all end in divorce anyway. I'm also a lot more environmentally oriented given that one of my careers involves living in the outdoors for months at a time, but I think our approach to politics is similar
The origin of the oppressive traits behind the N word are not imaginary. White trash and the N word are not equal levels of derogatory. That is a false equivalency. The white race does not have a word that is as bad as the N word. Plain and simple. That is why I, and any sensible human not trying to over-stretch their white rights would shoot it down. White people do not have our hands tied behind our backs, either. That's why I call you threatened, because you exaggerate what is being done to your race when really all that is happening is increasing SOME benefits and privileges for other races to put them on more equal grounds with us. You aren't losing any of your privileges or rights because another race is gaining more. That's not how it works.
This is doing a few things.
1. You're implying that other races aren't striving to hit a standard unless they have some sort of help. That isn't true. They are, but because of the way America is they receive less positive results largely because of the color of their skin. That isn't me saying skin color is the only reason things happen, but to deny it plays a role is ignorant just like to deny Woodley feeling the effects of racism would also be ignorant despite that not being the only factor to his unpopularity. Remember, acknowledging that something exists is not the same as acknowledging it as the only factor.
2. You're ignoring the politics of the last century. I've made this point here before, but the labor laws didn't outlaw discrimination until the human rights act of 1964. That's really, really recent in terms of generations. If the country was so racist that discriminating based on race was legal only a generation ago, do you really think there hasn't been any carry over that needs doing away with through government interventions? Like, do you really think that people of color now are just getting jobs because of the color of their skin or do you think that it was actually just all the white people benefiting from the color of theirs getting all these jobs in the first place, and now we're seeing that white people aren't the only ones qualified? I think that answer is pretty obvious.
3. White people are not being held down just because racism is being called out more and more.
This was weird.
On another note, this has gone on waaaay longer than I thought it would. We should probably stop bumping this at some point. I see your points, I think you see mine. Probably all there is to it, yeah?
I don't know how to break down the paragraphs like you did so I will just "bullet point" it.
- Maybe, to you white trash isn't equivalent to the "n word" because you have never been called white trash based on your circumstances and possibly because your history has not allowed you to feel discriminated against on account of your skin color. You, being a white guy, are actually being extremely condescending towards blacks with your "outrage on their behalf". You are basing a lot of your false mantra on "most whites" being oppressive when one major fact that is left out of all of the history books is that it was white men that had to decide to stand up for black men, first in a war and secondly in the congress and senate. Blacks didn't free themselves in our country, whites did. This is not a knock against blacks but an honest truth that seems to always escape the memories of our history books. You, also, falsely claim that the US was "built on slavery" but that is not true either. Our country was built on the vision of the Roman and English Empires. Whatever labor is available at the time of the "inception" of a country is what will be used to construct said country. For that matter, almost all countries were built on slavery if it is as you say. Secondly, whites didn't go into Africa and pull slaves out of the fields or trees, they picked them up at trading posts or other "slave labor agencies" that were providing them and most blacks were sold out by other blacks before they got to this country. In fact, slavery still exists in many parts of Africa... another fact that is commonly left out of the mainstream media.
- in regards to whites being "propped up", you are talking about marketing to a demographic. If the main demographic of a product or a law is white, then you market towards whites. If it is black, then you market towards blacks. This is basic economics 101. However, when it comes to "help", I believe in the "teach a man to fish" mantra. BET and Ebony Magazine are not the "teach men to fish" networks. If you want to be considered equal, in any arena (race, business, sports or other) you have to act equal. Don't ask for rules to be changed to accommodate you nor should you ask for special treatment once included. Ask for the same rules and treatment as everyone else and prove your worth.
- In regards to conservatism, you come across as a "pansy", so I will assume that you are not truly conservative but only say so to help push your liberal point across. If you were truly a conservative, you would never be for "propping" anyone up to hold down another or "make them equal" as you say. You would make the rules the same for everyone and ask that they all step up. Treating blacks like little kids is almost as bad as being a racist. You are essentially saying to them that they are not good enough to move forward "without your help". I happen to think differently.
- Pro gun, agreed... pro gay marriage? Why? What is the purpose of a gay marriage and by allowing it, you force us who are opposed to that lifestyle to have to explain to our children why their friend "has two daddies". You may say, like the liberal that you are, live and let live, but by allowing gay marriage, you are not "giving me that choice". I must accept it "or else". Also, gay marriage was voted down in every state that it went up for a vote. EVERY STATE, yet our government stepped in and told millions of Americans that their votes did not matter and they were passing the law, regardless. If the people voted for it or a state voted for it, so be it and let gays move to that state.
- You say that I feel "threatened" by increasing rights for minorities but I am not in the slightest threatened by this. What I do fear are morons, like you, trying to be so apologetic and compromising for things that you had absolutely no control of. You didn't create slavery nor did you oppress minorities so what can you do? I will tell you what I think you, and we all should do, not that it matters to you, but here goes anyway: WE SHOULD MAKE EVERYTHING THE SAME FOR EVERYONE. BET and Miss Black USA is not accomplishing that. Affirmative Action is not accomplishing that. You are merely "patting" a guy on the head and telling him "see, there little buddy, we are the same" when you don't really think that way. If you did, you wouldn't feel that you had to lower the standards for them.
- This, I had to quote/playback for you so that you could read how you are coming across like a total moron "
Remember, acknowledging that something exists is not the same as acknowledging it as the only factor."
You just generalized the actions, feelings and results of an entire race with your opinion there.... a bit racist don't you think?
- The politics of the last century is actually a good point that I referenced earlier in this post but all we can do is be inclusive and fair... as the generations of the past die off, the assimilation will complete itself.
- As for "whites" being held down, it is happening all of the time. Is it enough to do any harm to all of the country? No, but no one should be thrown under the proverbial bus, not one. If you can't acknowledge this, then you are more of a moron than I thought.
- You tried to portray yourself as a "black man" or a horrible apologist. Either way, that fact that you thought you could use a racist term to describe a white man but wouldn't dare to use one to describe a black man tells me you don't know what the hell you are even doing here. You don't get to decide which one hurts "more", that is up for the guy you called "white trash" and the guy who gets called the "n-word" to decide.
