Television TV Show Thread

I did not care for it at all when I was younger. Haven't gone back. However, I've found that as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate all of the most popular sci-fi's of the 90's upon reviewing. Deep Space Nine was a classic example. Loved Star Trek, hated it as a teen. Watched it in my 30's, dug the hell out of it. Same thing with Sliders.

The 90's was a golden era for sitcoms and sci-fi. Not so much for drama.
I enjoyed the ever-loving shit out of all of those, plus Star Lost, Space 1999, Lexx, Space Above and Beyond, Enterprise--though Paramount fucked it up early and often it also had the best 2-part show in Star Trek history to that point when they went to the "evil" universe, IMHO.

So I'm not getting why you say most TV SF belongs in a dumpster.

Just finished THE SWARM (2023) and I really liked it. The slow-burn sci-fi show is about a strange phenomenon happening all over the world where sea creatures are acting very bizarrely and oftentimes downright hostile to humans. This is similar to the recent sci-fi show INVASION but, in my opinion, way better because none of the characters in The Swarm are blatantly annoying or constantly do something stupid. There's a slow, grounded approach in how the story is unveiled and how the scientific experts gather information. I have not read the book, so I didn't have any preconceived expectations.

Thank you for this...Will definitely be giving this a shot.

Finished season one of The Bear.

Episode 7 "Review" was outstanding in how the story unfolded and how good that extended one-take sequence was.

Foundation is an atrocious adaptation of its source material, and is overall a subpar show quagmired in mediocrity. Lee Pace is extraordinary in it. That's why he's "wasted" on the show. He deserves better. I'm not alone in this assessment. The show's IMDb rating is a middling 7.5. Sure, it's better than most Sci-Fi on TV. The thing is that isn't some grand boast. It's my favorite genre, but almost all TV sci-fi is hot garbage.

You want to watch great TV? Go watch one of those shows recommended by the IMDb editors: The Bear.

Lee Pace is amazing in this, brings so much gravitas to the role. I hate much of their interpretation of the books. It was never going to be easy as they aren't character driven novels, which have large time jumps, but Pace made everything with the Empire storyline captivating. I've never seen a show so great in one segment and so garbage in another. The rest is so mediocre or awful that even the great Jarred Harris can't save it. Salvor and Gaal actresses are terribly written and poorly acted, but as I've said in another post surely, at least they get to stink up the screen together in S2.

Not a documentary. It's a sci-fi series about an ecological disaster and the personal drama of the human characters. Here's the trailer:

Thanks man. I watched ep 1 last night as I love whales, so majestic. I didn't read the description, as I thought it was going to be about the whales attacking ships. I was pleasantly surprised/intrigued. I like these multinational productions.

I hope Bob Odenkirk gets the nod. He was so great as Saul/Jimmy, even if I didn't like the ending.

Andor was my fav show, with Silo behind it (haven't seen them all though). I love a slow burns that culminates in a satisfying ending, Severance did that as perfectly as Andor.

Anyone read the Three Body Problem trilogy? I'm on book 2 (audiobook) but taking a break as I have to be in the right frame of mind to digest/absorb the Chinese names of characters and locations. It's almost exhausting lol but I absolutely loved the 1st book.

Anyway, there's a series coming to Netflix in January, made by the two Dave's of GOT infamy. They did a good job adapting GOT until they had to venture out on their own, as we all know.

However, Tencent already made the first season covering the first book and it's 30 freaking episodes long (45 mins or so each). What's awesome is that the entire season can be viewed on YouTube at 4K for free. Book 2 and 3 will also be adapted, as the show did super well in China. Hopefully they'll both be on Youtube as well.

A slight few Chinese commercials are included in each episode, which is kind of neat to see, reminds of the 90's when we had a giant Satellite dish and tuned into shows all over the world.

The pacing is all over the place, and the CGI/western casting can be spotty, but it's very faithful to the books, almost too faithful. I've been watching it on and off for the past month or so (on ep 20) as the subs make me sleepy, but it's def worth your time. I don't want to spoil anything, but It's incredible sci-fi goodness, if that's your thing.

The Chinese casting is good to excellent, and my fav character, Captain Shi, is the best of the bunch. he's getting a spinoff apparently.

Here's the entire playlist.

been binge watching swat over the past week or so, but i might give up on it. it was pretty good at first, but is getting to woke for me. i am learning that white nationalists are the biggest threat to america and minorities who are criminals still are good people in their heart. also, most of the characters have gone from likeable to unlikeable

It definitely turns into a hate watch. It's like there are no other detectives or other officers who can interview or deal with crimes. LA Swat must not have anything better to do than interview and chase leads.

Not a documentary. It's a sci-fi series about an ecological disaster and the personal drama of the human characters. Here's the trailer:

Are Binge shows available on another platform in the US?

yea, i made it through but it definitely was a hate watch. and good observation about swat turning into detectives.

Just finished The Bear season 2 episode 6 "Fishes".

Wow. Pressure cooker episode which will leave you emotionally drained by the end. The mom is clearly mentally ill as well as an alcoholic. It gives new perspective to Mikey's suicide. Pleasantly surprised at all the famous guest stars. Just noticed that Jamie Lee Curtis is not nominated in the Best Guest Actress category, which is a real shame as she was outstanding in here.

Yeah it was really well done. Loved Bob Odenkirk in his role too. I did not expect Donna to burst in like the Kool-aid man in the end. Lol

Just got into Peaky Blinders. First of all, what a great fucking show! Cillian Murphy (Tommy) and Paul Anderson (Arthur) are absolutely brilliant on this show. Second of all, how many cigarettes do they go through per episode? Holy smokes! Literally.

Great show to binge if you haven’t watched it yet.

The Blacklist ended this week. :(

Man, I'm going to miss that one. James Spader just killed it as Raymond "Red" Reddington.
