Television TV Show Thread

Started watching Those About To Die on Peacock. It takes place in Rome after the fall of Nero. It stars Anthony Hopkins as the new emperor Vespasian Flavianus, nearing his end and determining the succession of emperor. It also stars Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton from GoT) as Tanex, an underworld boss that runs a gambling den in the Circvs Maximvs. The show is fast paced with the narrative is decent. The show has been good so far. Nothing too deep like HBO's classic Rome, but it is nice to see the era represented again. Lots of greenscreen use to show places in the empire, but it is visually appealing. Lots of nudity as per usual with Rome. Chariot races and gladiator fights are central to the story as well. Overall, I am enjoying the show for what it is.

I had high hopes for this, but it's garbage for me. I'm maybe 7 episodes in, I've just kept it on in the background while I'm working on something else.
The writing and the direction are just really bad. The actors seem competent, but they're just given a lot of cringey things to say, and the goofy dialogue doesn't match up with the tits, blood, and serious tone they're trying for. The green screen backgrounds are very distracting and make the show look even less believable.
It is a shame because Iwan Rheon seems to always get shafted in projects like this. They look good on paper, but then the execution is usually shite.

I can see that. The show seems like it was cut and edited for the Euro market with the way scenes play out. Its pretty campy, but I thought it ended well. I would watch another season. Tenax has some ambitions to fulfill and he's laying that foundation at the end of the season.

I did end up finishing the season. There are aspects of the show that I like, but yea, going from the campiness in one scene to some tit sucking, boy loving, or body dismemberment in the very next scene just made it too hard for me to get into the show and enjoy it. Felt like it was a show that didn't know exactly what it was trying to be.

Not the worst show I've sat through, so I'd probably watch another season in the same fashion.

I thought the show in the last maybe 2 episodes was finally feeling solid. But the beginning through the middle, yeah the pace was way to fast and episodes contained a lot of shock value that didn't land as expected. It was almost going the Skinamax soft porn route for a bit. lol

But man, Rome was fucking brutal with the total disregard for human life! Also, I found Scorpius to be hilarious. I did enjoy his scenes. There were also some pretty women cast in the series. Especially Kyshan Wilson as Aura, Cala's daughter. Was nice to see she was not shy about nudity. At least the series didn't showcase male dong like HBO has been lately. lmao!

Good thing I bailed after watching it for 15 minutes

Yeah, I agree with that. Towards the end it was starting to shape up into something more solid as far as tone and direction goes.
But yeah, there was a lot of unnecessary shock value that didn't hit right because there wasnt much build up to deserve that reaction.
The story with his childhood friend just didn't make a lot of sense. They were both victims and young boys when that happened, and it wasn't like Tenax intentionally did anything against him. So for him to basically dedicate his life to this revenge and be that evil about it just didn't make sense.

I also like Scorpus a lot. There were some solid good characters there, I just wish they were handled better.
lol good point on the lack of dong and the cast of women. I'll give them their flowers for that.
liked Cala as a character and the actress, but she came across as an odd casting choice for what they had her doing in the show. She looked too good and young to be the mother of 3 'children' that old.

season 4 comes out Sept. 4th. Among the best shows on tv right now.

I really liked the first season. Thought S2 was quite poor. S3 was a rebound. I am definitely watching S4.

Nice thing about this series is that they pump them out, at least by the standards of modern prestige tv

They did the same with Blood of Zeus or what is its name.
Blood of Zeus wasn't on my radar until maybe last year, so I didnt know there was that big of a gap in between season 1 and 2.
It apparently is releasing it's final season next year though.

Blue Eyed Samurai seemed far more popular, so i dont get what the hold up is on projects like this, or Invincible. I know nothing about animation, but seems like it takes longer to do today, and with all of the technology that we have, i would have thought it'd be the opposite.

There are layoffs in the industry and there could be logistical issues moving more of the industry overseas i guess. Or maybe there is not that much Nflix serious animated stories and are afraid of damaging the brand by rushing it.

The layoffs part is what i dont get. I dont think there's been a time where anime has been more popular around the world, particularly to an adult audience.
Seems like the market is there, but that these companies want to do these things with a skeleton crew, regardless of how long it takes in order to save money on labor costs.

Common theme we've been hearing for years now about animation and CGI is how overworked artists are, but all of these projects tend to rake in shit tons of money.

Anime, not US animation.

I have read animation is really tedious and takes a lot of time to complete a few scenes 😆

I can understand that, but I don't get why there isn't a remedy to that. Again, I don't know anything about how the business works, but wouldn't the most obvious answer be to hire more people to keep up with the workload and get things out faster?

Obviously, companies want to make as much money as they can so are probably trying to squeeze whatever they can out of the workers they have, but when they're raking in the kind of money and popularity we're seeing from a lot of animation these days, having years long breaks doesn't make much sense to me.
