Started watching Those About To Die on Peacock. It takes place in Rome after the fall of Nero. It stars Anthony Hopkins as the new emperor Vespasian Flavianus, nearing his end and determining the succession of emperor. It also stars Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton from GoT) as Tanex, an underworld boss that runs a gambling den in the Circvs Maximvs. The show is fast paced with the narrative is decent. The show has been good so far. Nothing too deep like HBO's classic Rome, but it is nice to see the era represented again. Lots of greenscreen use to show places in the empire, but it is visually appealing. Lots of nudity as per usual with Rome. Chariot races and gladiator fights are central to the story as well. Overall, I am enjoying the show for what it is.
I had high hopes for this, but it's garbage for me. I'm maybe 7 episodes in, I've just kept it on in the background while I'm working on something else.
The writing and the direction are just really bad. The actors seem competent, but they're just given a lot of cringey things to say, and the goofy dialogue doesn't match up with the tits, blood, and serious tone they're trying for. The green screen backgrounds are very distracting and make the show look even less believable.
It is a shame because Iwan Rheon seems to always get shafted in projects like this. They look good on paper, but then the execution is usually shite.
