Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

Just went into debt for a business degree, why don't work in a factory instead?

Sure! Why use your degree to earn hundreds of thousands when you can spend 10 hour days on your hands and knees scraping wet cement until it’s smooth?

wish i could find the link, but in the run up to 2016 NPR went all over NC talking to people from tiny towns to big cities and just doing soft interviews asking about people's thoughts. I felt so bad when they were interviewing some citizens of a declining former textile mill town. They were so hopeful trump would turn things around. Maybe open up the mill again. maybe get the movie theater running again. These weren't crazy maga cultists, they just felt left behind, forgotten, and trump made an effort to reach out to them even though he had zero solutions to offer. it's sad to see the desperation of these people used against them.

yes very much so, albeit I'd feel be a whole lot sadder if that desperation didn't express itself so often as an amorphous resentment-bordering-hatred of all the convenient targets Trump puts up before them as decoys.

Because our country is so big I believe it’s hard for people to really understand what existence is like for Americans with a vastly different existence based on their geographical location.

When you drive through the Midwest all of the hopeless, forlorn, depressed emo music that came out of there makes sense. You can feel the sense of hopelessness and emptiness that permeates those giant fields of nothing. I didn’t start listening to hip-hop until I went to New York but you can understand how and why that music took off there. Spend any time stuck in an endless suburban sprawl and you will start getting subconsciously pissy and angry about it. Now add some teenage angst and hormones and you’ve got punk rock.

I am lucky enough to travel all over the United States for work. I was just in Austin, then Philly, and I’ll be in New Jersey in a couple weeks. It is easier to understand the POV of people when you spend a little time in their environments. not everybody has that opportunity, unfortunately.

I have long quipped that there should be 2 sets of laws in this country.

It's just a completely different world to go from people living elbow to elbow in big cities, and people who live in a 1 stoplight town in rural America. And neither of those 2 groups seem to be able to appreciate, or empathize with the other.

There are three main problems with the US policies.

One, extreme liberalism and capitalism. Corporations and us citizens are not driven by patriotism but by greed. They don't care about having a great country anymore, at least for the most, they want just to be rich, and if they are already rich, to remain rich, and to be richer. What is the most individualistic country on earth ? The US of course.

Two, economical sanctions and tariffs are done by politicians who have no skills in economic warfare. The tarrifs and sanctions done are often harming more the US than benefiting it. You don't let politicians to wage economic crusade against the whole world for their petty political careers to gain attention or momentum.

Three, sanctions and tariffs are usually not a good thing, because they are more mutual losses than individual gain. Diplomacy is key, because to gain, you need to gain with someone else.

US imperaliasm is dying, Trump is a good guy but he is only postponing the inevitable. The world of tomorrow will be multi-polar with a dozen of superpowers. The days of US supremacy are behind.

This is satire, right? These young people just spent 4 years and God knows how much money NOT to fucking forge steel and pour concrete. I would think it impossible for anyone to be as tone deaf as Trump is here.

lmfao, trump has lost his mind

Honestly it feels like he's trolling his own supporters at this point. He openly mocks their religion, and they kiss the ring. He mocks their economic struggles. They kiss the ring. He lies to them incessantly. They kiss the ring. He makes promises and then reneges. They kiss the ring. He shits all over the Constitution. They kiss the ring.

He's basically taunting them at this point. It's like he's challenging them to turn on him. And I think it's become pretty clear at this point that they aren't able to.

There has never been a more bitch-made group of servile imbeciles than MAGA. What a creepy and gross little cult. The only difference between Trump and Jim Jones is that Trump would charge for the Kool-Aid. And his supporters would pay him for it.

Do non-Catholics care about the pope?

I'm sure some do? Most Catholics voted for Trump, in case you weren't aware. His latest bit of stupidity up-thread is not exactly the first time he's made a mockery of Christianity / Catholicism. He claims to be a Christian, and I'd make an exhaustive list of all the times he has blasphemed and acted in a manner that is basically the complete opposite of how a Christian is supposed act, but I'd probably max out the character limit for XenForo.

And they kiss the ring.

not the only difference between them. trump would also manage to find a way to bankrupt his kool-aid stand.
